Bought wifey a Passat oil burner (well if I have to drive one so does she) and it's a lovely car with one slight worrying problem, when changing up from 3rd there is a slight catch as if the synchro isn't fully working, any ideas?

I'd check the clutch cable is correctly adjusted if it has one and the hydraulic clutch system is bled, adjusted and leak free if it doesn't and if all that's ok then you may have to consider that your 3rd gear synchro has gone south... I've no experience with this car though so there may be a passat 3rd gear gotcha that someone may know - try posting in the vw section.

I had the same thing on my tvr and after checking all the cheap bits it did turn out to be the syncro. Took the box out and had the syncro fixed along with a couple of other bearings for about 200 quid. That was a ford type 9 box.

I think I know the problem. You see, if you want your CAR fixed, you take it to a garage where mechanics sit around all day drinking tea. If you want your CAT fixed, take it to a vet. Not the other way round.

Easy mistake I know, but just try and learn from it for the future...

Hey mate, does sound like a synchro ring issue, but you definately should have a chat with this fella

He's a very very very nice man and knows a thing or two about boxes. I had a synchro ring replaced in an Astra box a few years back and it cost about £80-100 IIRC.

If this isn't a known problem with these cars and they've been kicking about for a bit you'll be able to pick up a 2nd hand box for less than that I imagine.

In the short term I wouldn't worry about it, just drive around it... I waited 18 months to fix my tvr.

Same `box as the octavia I believe.

Bad news is.......................... common fault (is it a high miler, and what year) Third gear is the first to go!

Sounds like driver error to me. Have you tried cadence clutching?

Er, do you mean double de-clutching? They're different things IIRC. Double de-clutching used to work around the fishy synchro on my old escort.

have you checked the oil? Try changing it for new stuff, maybe semi-synth.

Made this mistake with my cat.

Garage connected the diagnostic machine to the cats testicles - poor thing has never walked straight since.

It cured his cough though....

I think the passats use the same transaxle gearbox as most FWD audis Apache, you may be able to get a cheap one second hand if necessary.....iirc 089 box but not 100% sure on that.hth.

cheers guys, it's something that wouldn't even be noticed by a 'normal' driver but I can tell something aint right. I'll change the oil first, it's on 150k with fsh

As it's the wife's car then I wouldn't worry about it. Mine was unable to detect that she's been driving down the m'way with 5psi in one rear tyre slow rubbing the side wall away... bless 'em.
