Glowing Discs - M3 E46.
Discussion
Went out to get Breakfast this morning and the car starts Juddering after approx 1 1/2 miles.
Check the Front Wheels as the Tyre Inflation warning comes on and the Drivers Side Front Wheel is Glowing Red.
Checked opposite side and the Disc appeared to be normal.
Called BMW out to check the car and they are not sure as to why this has happened so off to the Dealer.
Problem is the warranty does not cover Brake Discs.
I have only driven 1,200 miles in the car since purchase of the car and am a little peeved to be billed for a problem which I feel should not happen especially as the car has never been tracked or abused since we purchased it.
(ref : its a 2002 model ) purchased from a Main BMW Dealer.
Has anyone else experienced this problem ?
Should the Supplying Dealer offer some form of goodwill ? Or is that asking too much ?
Any advise on this subject would be great guys.
Thanks for any help.

If you've bought through a main stealer, and it is a seized caliper or blocked hose (most likely explanation), they "should" repair it under warranty, especially if you bought it recently ie within the last couple of months. The disc itself isn't covered, cos its a wear item, but a caliper or hose failure should be ok.
Just got the call from the Dealer.
The Brake Caliper Seized.
The work was carried out under BMW Warranty.
Car was ready at 9.30am this morning which I thought was good.
Maserati take bloody ages to fix anything !
The Level of service from BMW including the On Road Assistance was first class and speed of the loan car was outstanding.
Overall an excellent service - Now I know why we purchased a BMW.
Thanks Guys for your advice on this subject.

do you know what they replaced ?
Calipars should be replaced in pairs, as should the brake discs with new pads as should the brake fluid as you would have guaranteed to boil it in the siezed calipar.
This happen to me too in an X5 - they refused to replace the discs as they were below minimum thickness - if they are above this, then these are replaced too under warranty.
A heated steel disc will fracture much more easily if heated to the levels you inticated (ie red hot)so make sure they have done the job properly and not just installed one new calipar...

Hi Richard.
I am still awaiting the paperwork but what you have mentioned concerns me.
My friend said the same thing today.
From looking at the car no Discs were replaced.
Only one caliper was replaced and Im not sure about the Break Pads.
Is this something I should push for and can the additional pad / caliper be replaced under warranty ?
Thanks for your advice mate
Pete

Calipers in pairs... really??
Discs, pads, dampers and preferably tyres should go in pairs, but calipers can be replaced individually.
Mind you, if I needed new seals and maybe a new piston on one side, then I'd do the other one as a matter of course.

Get the Maserati back!
I'd say they only replaced the disc & pads on that wheel, the 'judder' is normally caused by uneven pad deposits on the brake disc due to overheating, feels like a warped disc or unbalanced tyre and a pretty common problem on the heavier M5 during aherm, spirited driving.
Stoptech / brembo / APracing aftermarket kits are the only real cure for overheating brakes in such instances

Hehe. I miss the Stunning Looks and Performance of the 3200 SJ but not the Problems nor the hassle from the Main Dealer.
Calipar's replaced in pairs are BMW's recommendation depending on mileage - of course they would say this but I completly agree with the logic. You'd replace discs in pairs, pads in pairs, you change the fluid all round, tyres on the same axle blah blah so why not the calipar ? As a low wear item (all that wears is the rubber seals) when I think it is 'safe' to not replace it if low mileage (say under 60K) but if one calipar had done 100K and the other is brand new, would you not get more brake force with one ? unsure...
With regards to the discs, an overheated disc will appear bright orange on the cooling fins (heated rust) compared to the others, indicating that both should be replaced. News pads naturally go with new discs. Overheated pads will most certainly crack sooner and have a glaze that will need removing to get the friction back.
I would ask to speak to the mechanic that did the replacement to get his views. If BMW had the chance to get more money out of you then they would have so I'm surprised they did not offer you options of replacing non warranty but 'recommended' items.
Hope this helps and doesn't add to your worries !...

just to add - they wouldn't have just replaced the disc and pads on one wheel - if they did then they need to be shutdown. That is just asking for unbalanced braking and an accident ...
A quick look at the condition of the disc (wear - there will be a small 'lip' on the outside of the disc if worn) and thickness of the pads will tell you...
