I don't believe it! Smart have changed the caliper bolts that enable you to change the pads to 5 sided ones, I presume to prevent anyone servicing their own vehicle.

Phoned Smart and they do not sell any tools for general use!

Anyone know where I can get a Spanner?

I'm seething.

Typical!

How about buying one of those multi-purpose sockets that will fit on any profile?

Cannot remember what they're called but they look like a normal socket with lots of tiny pins inside.

Not a unique idea, but annoying all the same. Some Bendix brakes used on Citroens have five sided bolts, I think the socket for that job was made by Facom, their UK base is,or at least was, in Chertsey in Surrey. Calls to Facom, the local Mac Tools and Snap-on men should pin it down.

Smart factory added to list of targets, along with Brussels and the originators of Section P...

Angle grinder, drill, hacksaw, whatever it takes, then replace with proper bolts, then take fragments of originals (with lots of sharp cut edges) to Smart HQ and insert in the appropriate anus.

I just had a similar problem with my E34 5 Series. a 7mm allen key!!! who the chuff uses those? but conventiently a Torx head fits quite neatly instead. Problem solved and dealer fee (which I just learned to be £98 + VAT per hour at BMW!!!) back in the pocket.

Take this from a mechanic, they are s*** break so easily, and caliper bolts would break them no problem, when i did a smarts brake pads i had to use a 3ft breaker bar to undo the bolts.

Why did you need a breaker bar? I have changed a couple of sets of pads using my tool box that cost £20 from Hellfruads and an adjustable spanner from the poundshop. No issues in a combined 12,000 miles since doing both cars.

I had (and probably still have) got a couple of cam ring spanners which fit pretty much any size/shape of bolt head. They need more access than a conventional ring spanner, but they're very handy for undoing odd sizes when a simple adjustable won't do. They're only cheap things, but I haven't seen any in the shops for years.

That rings a bell. I can't mind what size allen key it is that holds Mondeo mk1 & 2 brake calipers on (it was 7mm or 9mm I think). Only after I'd got the car jacked and wheels off I found it was the only size that didn't seem to come in the usual sets... !!

maybe it's to stop "Bodge It Bob" from rounding them off with bi hex sockets or open ended spanners.

Ikea? Wish I had known that last week, then I could have used one of the manufacturedfromchocolate free ones?! Actually, I thought Ikea ones were somewhere in the 5-6mm region. But I haven't bought any of the big stuff which is likely to have larger fasteners.

WRT the Ford thing, do Ford supply a 7mm allen wrench or 3/8" drive socket through dealers? I imagine it would be cheaper than BMW Special Tool 99-RAPED-67543?

I'm sure the OP has been anxiously waiting nigh on 5 years for that reply. Good on you!
