Or is it just me being paranoid?

Yesterday, on Bank Holiday Monday, i received a telephone call around 5pm purportedly from BT. I initially thought it was a sales call so said i did'nt have time, but then the chap said that it was'nt a sales call, it was to do with my bill. I said it would be paid tomorrow, as i received it just before christmas and had been away over the festive period. The chap then asked me to confirm my address and the amount of the bill (which i did'nt) before then asking me if i wanted to pay it over the telephone as it would be quicker and much more convenient. I declined, reiterating that i had already written the cheque and would be paying it at a bank on Tuesday.

OK, so i admit the payment is slightly late, but i have not received my red reminder, and have never been contacted by phone before. Is this standard practice by BT for late payments?

Sounds like it could be OK but not worth the risk.

As a rule, never give any payment details to anyone who calls you - they could be anyone.

Greg, its just BT trying to be efficient most likely, probably you got flagged up cos this was an anomoly compared to your usual payment on time pattern....

I get about a dozen calls a day, I always just put them on hold, I got one of those music thingy hold functions and have YMCA banged in, needless to say, they dont hang around long... although one foreign lady stayed on for about 25 minutes!!!!!

No scam assuming the phone call was legitimate. BT have been doing this for over a year now:

The problem being how do you know the call is legitimate? I don't think I'd give any details over the phone to call out of the blue.
