He hasn't been knighted, he's been given the CBE. Deserved for a tireless hard working and honest celeb.

It's Tom Jones who has become "Sir Tom Jones", that I can't understand!

The whole things a joke.

Gordon Ramsey got a gong. For s sake. Whats that ever done to deserve a gong for s sake. All he does is swear on the telly and he gets a gong. Pete and Dud should have been knighted if thats all it takes.

If I'm right and am prepared to be corrected on this, but aren't most of these government recommended awards and nothing to do with the Queen?

Maybe Ramsay jumped Blair over the queue into his restaurant one night in return for an OBE.

Don't think there's anything wrong with GR getting an OBE or Heston Blumenthal for that matter. They are damn good chefs.

A knighthood for Tom Jones though? Do us a favour! Never has someone had such a long but unprolific career.

Edited to say: You are right FWD and the list reflects this in the worst way.

I always thought the government and the Queen submit their own entries????

IIRC the Queen is only responsible for Garter Knights?

Unlike many, Bruce paid his dues, and has been at the top of his profession for nearly fifty years, unlike some of the current crop of entertainers (Peter Kay excepted) such as Johnny Vegas, who are (imo) as funny as toothache.........

We have this debate at every honours list:

People who have done 'very well thank you' from a career in entertainment, civil service, business or sport getting an award for, well, doing a job they have been paid very well to do.

I would like to see some firmer and public criteria which include a significant contribution of their time for others (and I don't mean an odd celebrity appearance, cricket match or Royal Variety show). I am not convinced half of this 'charity' would be done if they didn't get their faces on the tele or in the papers. I know a relatively weel known film actor who did work for a worthy cause (well came and had his picture taken twice)who told me that he did it to get a gong because the Americans love it whe they come to cast for films.

Personally I would like to see serial foster parents, charity fund raisers and people who hang on like whippets to issues and make a real difference to other people's lives given awards, whether or not it is liked politically .

But folks like these do figure in the honours, in very large numbers, it's just that the media only report the celebrity honours, which are only a small proportion. If you scan the full listings, there will be loads of folks you never heard of.

I am not sure what proportion of the population are professional entertainers and sportsmen/women. I would guess they are disproportionately represented in the lists, especially at the top end of the honours tree. They also tend to get multiple honours (e.g. Coe)

Full list here, 95 pages and hundreds and hundreds of names, virtually NO celebrities despite the media exposure.

www.number-10.gov.uk/files/pdf/QueensListdfjh784575hekjfffffff4435.pdf

Bit boring though, nearly all business people or civil servants.

The Honours list is a total joke.

Celebs are given gongs simply for pursuing their own careers. Ramsey - why? Baskar - you have to be kidding...just PC'ness/

It used to be that the honours went to those who had worked hard for the public good for many years, usually with little reward or recognition.

Now they just go to "celebs" who have ruthlessly pursued their own very lucrative careers.
