Chaps, was wondering this evening about insurance. My wife and I are currently paying about £1kpa each for a BMW X5 4.4V8 and M5. She has a few careless points and a couple of years no claims (too many years of company cars) and I have full no claims and a clean licence. Both are unlimited mileage with Class 1 business use and European cover.

My plan for returning to TVRland will involve me getting a TVR plus a motorway hack, probably a Chimaera and a Saab 9-5 estate. My old Cerbera cost about half as much as the M5 to insure, my previous Saab 9-5 Aero a little less.

With us ending up with three cars, I was curious as to the benefits of a single policy, or linked policies. Our current insurer, Privilege don't offer this facility, and I would effectively be starting one policy from scratch.

Anyone have any experience of such policies and have thoughts on what to look out for, who to go to, and the benefits (or drawbacks) of such a route?

Thanks for your help.

I couldn't find a group policy for when we had three cars, so looked into methods to mirror an NCB to bring in some discount on the newest member of the fleet.

I insured tbe two sensible cars with Admiral in my wife's name (as my NCB was on the TVR), who mirrored her 2 years NCB, after that year of cover they allowed me to transfer the cover to me for the following year, so I got two years NCB for free on that car.

We have three cars too, and there was no way I could find anyone to do me a deal on insurance regarding multiple cars, so I had to pay three seperate premiums, along with three NCB protections.
Not too expensive though, for a Tamora, MGF Trophy 160 (group 16!) and a 1.2 Clio, the whole lot still comes to just under £1K.

I have also just started looking into this so any info will be much appreciated. Directline are offering a multiple car discount/deal but I dont have all the details yet. Bet they are expensive though.

Cheers all.

I think as a general rule you will find you have to insure each car seperatly. The NCB you have would only be applicable to the "named" car you drive and not each one, you can try to argue that you can only drive one car at a time but i've found that doesn't wash.
Shop around to Brokers or Classic car Insurers and you may find they will offer a "Family" package or "Fleet package" but this is only another way of saying - place all your business with me and I will give you a discount.
Best of luck.
