"Canada has a gang problem, not a gun problem". They are blaming the US for failed social programs that no longer contain their own problems.

Speaking to folks I know in and around Toronto (my grandparents/aunt/uncle etc live in Ontario), the gang violence is mostly involved with immigrants setting up their 'ghettos'. Toronto is the city I have felt most safe and at ease in ever, and it saddens me to hear of this incident (reminds me of the New Years eve shootings in Birmingham).

Last time I was out there (admittedly 12months ago) passport control was full of folks from Africa, with some in very traditional African dress, not to brilliant when its -20oC outside. It seems that Canada is suffering from very similar immigration troubles as the UK, it also seems to have a very liberal goverment at the moment that seem to adopt the "ignore it and it will go away" attitude.

I'm really hoping Canada doesnt go down the pan the same way as the UK has.

Regards
Iain

Not all of us do.

We have our own problems, which may, or may not, be related to anything that is happening in the US at the moment. There will always be those people who don't want to take responsibility for anything 'bad' that happens and will try to blame someone else. It also happens both ways.

Also, what makes the best 'sound bite' out of that report? Oddly enough, the headline, not the far more sensible 'It's an easy way of looking at one symptom rather than addressing a whole disease', which was also mentioned. A soundbite that you have perpetuated . A far better headline would be 'Fing politician says something stupid, again'.

I'd rather not get into the whole gun control bit, because as was also mentioned, no matter how strict our controls get, we STILL have a problem with STOLEN Canadian guns. Doesn't really matter how easy it is to get a gun in the US when it's still easy for a criminal to get them here.

You may also notice that the soundbite headline was spewed forth by a politician (the mayor of Toronto). Gee, wonder if he was only trying to get his name in the media?? Anything that comes out of any politicians mouth is due solely to their desire to get re-elected. If you (not you Jim, just anyone) take what they say at face value, well, you're just not too bright.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "politically correct" atmosphere in Canada too which will cause the root cause to be avoided...guns will probably get the blame.

Quite so. Actually, I believe Canada's PC Brigade started before yours did.

Difference is that so far they've had less influence, as a libertarian (not Liberal in the current UK sense) approach to government has been in force.

Oh well, last refuge of those who like their freedoms is going down the tubes...

Exactly

A PC culture, that talks only of rights never of responsibilities, combined with lax immigration controls. It was a disaster waiting to happen and US gun laws are entirely irrelevant.

PC culture is probaly why they don't deport vilolent imigrants. remiond you of anywhere?

Ontario cops are outraged that a suspected Tamil gang boss who survived two ambushes -- including one in which 16 shots were fired -- is being spared deportation from Canada.

Even though he's deemed a danger to the public, Jothiravi Sittampalam, 35, aka Kannan, founder of the brutal AK Kannan street gang, was granted a new immigration hearing this month following an appeal to the Federal Court of Canada.
