I noticed posters on windows of the local MVC store today saying they've gone bankrupt, and any gift vouchers bought prior to today are worth NIL, not nice if customers bought them as a Christmas present .Also they stated that cash paid special orders won't be honoured.

The only news online I have found so far was on RTE business news.
I was at MVC on Xmas eve and everything looked normal

That does sound harsh. However, not suprised that MVC have gone bankrupt - talk about monopolies, but Virgin and HMV surely have it (not saying i don't like these stores because i do - they have it just right IMHO)

I've never liked MVC as a shop. Haven't been in for a few years, but they had this discount card and the 'MVC Price' which you needed to register to get.

So I just go to HMV, Virgin etc and pay the same as the MVC Price but without the hassle of carrying a card.

The shops always had a 'bargain basement' aura about them I thought.

So both companies have got a monopoly - how does that work then?

I think basic economics can't have been on the curriculum back then!

MVC was the only loyalty card I've ever used, but it was great. I used the store for geographic reasons and it served me well, the card conditions were puzzling, but every now and again I'd bought the right combination of stuff and got money off. I miss 'em.
