Was just looking into a possible purchase from the states, and although its pennies to ship a car over, you then get hit with 10% duty on cost of vehicle+shipping costs+insurance, and then the total of all that plus the 10%, you pay 17.5%!!!!

Loopholes anyone???? email please!!!!

I thought that if you keep the vehicle for over twelve months, you don't pay one of the taxes. I looked into in detail to bring a car over earlier in the year, but am now looking at taking one over there instead. A google search will tell you all you need to use. I had some good quotes from shipping companies based in New York & New Jersey.

I understand a few of the guys bringing jap imports in kick a few windows in and bend a couple of panels, salvage is taxed completely differently, the difference in duty / VAT paid more than pays for the cosmetic repairs to the car.

The only way you can reduce this is to get an agent in the US to buy the car. He then sells you the car at a fair though lesser value. You pay tax on the value you pay and the value declared on the export documents. However, a huge undervalue and Customs will step in and value it themselves plus it's hard to insure it on marine insurance for a much higher value than you paid as "it's a bit of a giveaway".

One way is to find a seller you trust and agree a price. If you want to pay him a finder's fee before or later that's up to you. However, it's not unknown for C&E to ask to see proof of the amount you sent to the US because they want to tax everything, including shipping.

Obviously, I am not advocating doing any of this. You should bear in mind that some cars still work out pretty cheaply even when you do pay everything.

Why should you not have to pay import taxes?

Is it no cheaper to ship to another EU country such as Ireland and import it from there?
IIRC they were doing that with Japanese grey imports a few years ago>
