Well how daft does life get?

Amidst the talk of various people and institutions replacing "Happy Christmas" with "Happy Holidays", I was busy contemplating how you react to someone, who is "probably" not Christian (although I guess a statement like that could make me racist) when they wish you "Merry Christmas" (i.e. they're obviously being polite to you about something they think is in your calendar but isn't in theirs!)

The problem with this is that as an atheist (but you can't really deduce that from my appearance I suppose) I get wished something that doesn't mean anything to me!

Anyway, so we're now seeing "Happy Holidays"

Just how is that?????

I mean - it's only a "HOLY-DAY" if you're F'ng Christian anyway! It's not a holiday/holyday to me any more than "Christmas" is!

traditionally its Merry Christmas

although I must say for me at least 'fairly pissed-mas' is probably more accurate on Christmas eve.

But then your regular annual vacation is most usually refered to as a holiday, though there is usually nothing 'Holy' about it.

personally I think too much is being made of this (not here BTW but on other sites) does it matter ? If someone says either Happy Holiday or Happy/Merry Christmas I will not be bothered either way.

The problem with saying Happy Holidays is that it's confusing as you could fool yourself into packing your suitcase thinking you're off somewhere nice and warm also what happens in the summer when you're off on holiday and somebody say Happy Holidays and you think oh shit I've forgotten to get everyone a present. It's Christmas for FFS and has been for (where's that timeline?) years.

Merry or Happy Christmas.

I agree with Corpulent Tosser (never imagined I would ever have to type such a sentence), seems to be just an excuse for yet another rant against PCism IMO.

The bloke who runs the local indian food empire wished me a merry christmas

He's a hindu, and the closest I've been to a religeous experience is standing near Ayrton Senna

I also wish people a "happy birthday" even though, in most cases, it's been years since they were born

Shouldn’t Christmas be for Christians and happy holiday, seasons greetings etc be for non-Christians.

Of course its "Merry Christmas". Its christmas that I'm celebrating.

Now if someone is celebrating "National Scientology Brainwashing day" the I would expect them to wish me a "Happy National Scientology Brainwashing day".

Pretty simple really.

How could somone be offended by that?
Is there ANY grounds to take offence?

Case in point, a colleague of mine wished me a happy Diwali earlier in the year. Should I have been massively offended and taken the company to a tribunal for religious discrimination because I wasnt celebrating his religious holiday?

If you did so recently, I would have to agree.

But who really cares? I'm not having a go at you C C, but I really think that it's not important. The fabric of society is not going to collapse because a non-Christian says "Happy Christmas", is it?

Besides, the holiday is Christmas - you can use the word whether or not you take the deep meaning from it or just use it to refer to the holiday (not holyday) that we have around Christmas.

What a ridiculous thing to argue about.

I’m not that bothered either. It’s the sprit of good will that is passed on is what’s really important.
