I don't answer private numbers on my mobile, have a message on the voice mail to say please leave a message I will not answer withheld numbers. If they don't leave a message i don't need to talk to them. phone only rings once so not disturbing but i am sure it is possible to configure to not ring on withhelds i just need to find it.

I'm on Orange PAYG and got a call from someone claiming to be from Orange a couple of months ago. It went something like this:
Them: Hi! I'm from Orange and we've noticed that you've never had an upgrade on your contract phone!
Me: I'm on PAYG.
Them: Would you like an upgrade on your contract?
Me: I'm not on a contract. I'm on PAYG.
Them: You're not on a contract?
Me: I've been on PAYG for the last 8 years and if you were really from Orange you would know that. Goodbye.
Click. brrrrr....

These are often phone shops or other phone sellers who have somehow got your details and are trying to get you to upgrade to a new phone so they get comission on it.
You did the right thing - challenge them to know things they should already know, like name, billing address, etc.
And never give them those details first.
Boosted.
I had one a while back saying he could offer me a better deal on my mobile ... so I couldn't resist ...
Bloke: How much do you spend on your mobile each month
Me: £0 - I work for Vodafone
Bloke: What about line rental
Me: £0 - it's a company phone
This goes on for a few mins.
Bloke: How about your father
Me: He has free line rental and low cost calls (Staff perk)
Bloke: We could save him money
Me: No you can't
Bloke: Would you like to think about it and I call you in a couple of days
Me: Your OK thanks ...
10/10 for effort, but talk about no common sense, amusing though.

I work for one of the major banks in the legal department, and we have over 200 people a MONTH who get their accounts EMPTIED after they answer calls and emails asking for their personal details and, get this, PIN NUMBER.
"Hi, I am from HSBC..... I need your name, mother's maiden name, account number, sort code and PIN to update our records...."
"Hmm, yeah no problem mate, they are..........................."
DO NOT FALL FOR THIS THE BANKS NEVER RING AND ASK FOR THIS STUFF!!!
