For a work project I'm looking at how people get to work around the world. What drives transport policy and the like. I'm enjoying "The bus we all loved" which is fun - even if I hate buses, it's good to know that even the bus lobby feel let down by Livingstone who said that the Routemaster would run until 2017 by which time there would be a new bus built specifically for London. Then he killed the Routemaster and imported bendy buses which don't work in London.

Next steop trams: which were abandoned in 1952 for being "about as relevant to modern transport needs as the horse and cart".

Can anyone recommend something weightier on transport planning?

have you tried the dept of transport website? failing that London transport museum and york railway museum most likely have archivists who will happily help you.
