I'm watching a programme on telly which is slating certain high street banks for lending money to people who can't afford to repay the loan. One chap being interviewed complained that the bank never asked him enough questions.

I mean, how ridiculous is that? Have these people never heard of "personal responsibility"?

Maybe the bank should have asked him if he could afford it.

How on earth did he expect to pay back £100k on £13k a year?

If I was him I wouldn't have bothered applying in the first place!

Couldn't agree more srebbe, it's your own choice how much to borrow.

"personal responsibility" is something that has been abandoned in today's society.

Yes, but they think it only applies to other people

I can't really say much being someone that tried touching a transformer in a computer power supply - shocking! Still, at least I didn't try sueing Tiny computers.

It isn't taught at school.

Insidious marketing and salesmanship can make people feel that they're doing the right thing, especially if they're financially vulnerable.

It's not good, but it's another hazzard of modern life. We're all told to look both ways before we cross the road, how about being taught how to read a finance agreement.

A mate has just started as a loan shark... well he's started his own finance company. As much as I dislike that industry and the mess people can get into because of it, he has made over 1/2 a million in the last 4 months.

It's because of things like this that "personal responsibility" has become a non-issue.

While there is always someone else to blame, while there is never a hard option, while there is always a benefit state to sponge off/credit union to claim from/"ClaimsDirect" to apply to, why should anyone take personal responsibility?

Matthew-TMM will never touch a computer transformer again. (Probably!) Why? Because he knows it hurts. If he didn't find out the hard way, he may make a habit of touching computer transformers. The world is going the same way. If you can have as many kids as you like, live in a council house, sponge off every DHSS grant out there and never have to suffer a day's discomfort, let alone some form of social stigma, why not do it?

Because its more financialy viable to be a "victim" in this claim society we have created in the civil world, that changes when it becomes criminal.
Now if we could just turn it around we could be on a winner.

Tell me about it, as an IFA we get the brunt of the compensation culture day in day out, the Leaches that run the no win no fee endowment claims companies run totally unregulated organisations that make our lives a misery coercing "their clients" to make totally unfounded complaints knowing full well in many cases that the clients do not have a valid claim, these claims take many weeks to investigate and of course cost a great deal of money. At the end of which even if the claim is found to have no merit the client has the right to go to the ombudsman at which point we have to pay hundreds of pounds to have the case investigated again, at the end of all this we are massively out of pocket even if the case is not upheld in favour of the client. We have no right to pursue the client for out costs despite the fact that in many cases the accusations made are libelous. If we loose the case, then with the state of the PI market today we will have to pay the first £7.5k of the claim out of our own pockets.

The bottom line with the whole endowment review debacle is clients are unhappy with the performance of thier investment, would they really be claiming that they had been misold a policy if there were no projected shortfall on the plan. If they are unhappy with the returns acheived then this is down to the insurer and not the IFA, after all we don't manage their money.

A colleague of mine had a telephone conversation with a "client" a few months ago. The chap had phoned up to compalain about his endowment policy, when asked what his complaint was he was told by the client that he didn't know, but if he complained he would get 3 grand!
