Thoughts on limited slip diffs

Do the latest Ultimas really need LSD's. I would think it would only ever be needed on track, has anyone seen a lot of benefit from a LSD on trackdays. I'm thinking it would need pretty extreme conditions to activate it in an Ultima (in the dry), I'm mainly asking here regarding GTR's with around 540 bhp, not the hyper output cars ?

I had a Toyota MR2 with under 200 BHP (and it had only a little less traction than the Ultima's 1.3-g skidpan results, with good tyres, and was 58% rearward weight-bias similar to the Ultima), which needed an LSD to keep it from slipping without a racing start on a rainy road (only what I'd call a "fairly aggressive, normal street-start" ). ...and in dry dirt, it was useless, couldn't even drop two wheels off the pavement to change a tyre or read a map, w/o a high likelihood of getting stuck!

So I'd definitely put an LSD, or even trac-control, in a 550 HP Ultima since it's even more powerful than my MR2, but I'm not sure what your intended usage is...

In that case, why don't LSD's come as standard on all boxes ?

Firstly cost - a G50 LSD is around another £800 - £1000 (Quaife)

Secondly handling - most average drivers prefer the predictability of the normal diff (Understeer), rather han under-under-under-s$$$ oversteer when the diff grips...

Anyone feel free to correct me on that 2nd point if I'm wrong, I don't have an LSD (yet! Waiting for a better box before I spend the extra cash...), but that's what I remember reading happens...
