Man, i hate being on auto pilot!
Discussion
I can't believe how far out of my way i went today by making a series of 'autopilot' mistakes!
I was going from Chesham to Ruislip, so all i had to do was follow signs to Rickmansworth and then chuck a right, I think its about 15 miles.
On my route i came across the M25 so i decided to hop onto that instead and zip round to the M40 because i know the route and its easy. Unfortunatley whenever I use the M25 I am ussually going to the M1, so i went the wrong way. It took me a few minutes to realise so i decided to get off at the M1 and go south for one junction and spin round and reverse the journey.
Blow me if i didn't stay on autopilot and go North on the M1 instead (my usual way home) And with Junction 8 being closed (the reason i didn't just got to Hemel from chesham and jump on the M1.) I now had to go all the way up the A5 before i could turn around
By the time i got to ruislip i had done approx 40 Miles in rush hour traffic even though I left Chesham at 4:30 facing a 15 mile blat.
Anyone else manage this kind of thing?

And there you have a very perceptive individual!
I'm pretty bad though. I swear I'll never get GPS, but every now and then I decide I'll go from point to point on an arbitary unplanned route. You know maybe, Sussex to Cornwall, using the mental compass. The journeys are often the most interesting drives, but I'd swear they're not the shortest!
Don't get stuck on a motorway though. It's bad for the cholesterol levels.

I once spent an infuriating amount of time riding around Harlow in the middle of the night thinking "Where the
are the
signs for the A1184? Not the
A414, what stupid

places than
Chelmsford and

Found ourselves in the back streets of gay Paree, towing a trailer tent, kids wanting toilets, me and the missus each blaming the other for every wrong turn or further delay
I've also done that 'autopilot' thing where you take the road you drive the most, so instead of going down the M1 to Sheffield I went down the A1 to Nottingham...
Mind you, and I know it's a navigation f**k-up rather than autopilot... my mother once took us, as kids, to the picturesque village of Hutton-le-Hole, on the North Yorkshire Moors.
Except she didn't: we ended up in Hetton-le-Hole, a desperately squalid pit village, near Sunderland

Had this the other night on my drive home from the office (wimbledon) to home M4 Jct5 (I like my job!!) Got to the Hogarth Roundabout (by TVR London) in near record time due to a collection of well planned shortcuts. And came to a halt, a car had broken down on the M4 (maybe on a test drive
) So I thought I'd cut through Chiswick, not really knowing the best route, but an hour later I'd made it to Acton and the A40.... Gotta love those 2 hour drives home from the office.

One day last year I drove the normal 15 minute route said "there you go kids, have a nice day". There was no reply so I looked round to find it was an empty car. I then realised it was the school holidays. DOH!

I am incapable of making mistakes such as this. The closest I have ever got was a few years ago when I threw the yoghurt pot in the sink and the spoon in the bin by mistake. I got over it eventually, several years of therapy made me realise it was a simple mistake and at my age I was bound to do somthing like that from time to time.

My brother is directionally dyslexic (and actually properly dyslexic too, probably a link there...). He lives in St Neots, I'm in Reading. Not exaggerating at all, but the first 4 times he came to visit me I got a phone call from him asking "Reading is off the M3 isn't it?". He just could not get off the M25 at Jn14 for some reason, just kept having a brain fade and going straight past.
He was a courier driver for a while... I say a while, he was fired after 3 days after only managing to deliver one parcel in that time.
