I was browsing Fifth Gear's website and started reading their test drives. I found this one of the Tuscan. They're as bad as TG for hating TVRs - poofs.
They really make TVR out to be demon cars.

Have to say with Tiff, Jason Plato and VBH all on the show I had high hopes for it but it just seems to fall short on being worth watching!!
I can't see how they can knock the Tuscan for lack of safty equipment when all they seem to do with traction control etc... is turn it off and moan when they can't!!

Quiet amazing and surprising really when you consider Plato spent half of his last supercar road test complaining he couldn't turn off the traction control. I think it was a Lambo, but his moaning put me off listening or watching

Re: Fifth Gear:
1. Both cars were hammered around the track in the most lurid, damage-inducing fashion possible for the benefit of the cameras. Including director's request: "can you exit the corner on the mud for a bit of drama?". Which caused the following car to be plastered in stones and sh1t.
2. The cars never missed a beat, despite doing the equivalent of a 5 hour trackday session - ie longer than a GT race. And bear in mind that, despite racing, GT drivers aim to preserve their cars. VBH and JP wouldn't have given a
if the cars were consigned to a lowloader - and drove accordingly, laughing and shrieking all day. Nice work...
3. Anyone who has a T2 will confirm that even prizing off the wiper knob is not easy.
VBH claims it "fell off". Yeah, and I'm a Chinaman. That was the Tuscan's only fault and used to "prove" quality has not improved.
4. Plato complained of "carpet edges showing". Bullsh1t. He did however note that a control box came loose in the driver's footwell. Fair cop but (a) the car might as well have been inside a washing machine as it was hurled around Anglesey, (b) this problem was reported back to the factory and rectified.
My take is that it's fine for journos to give press cars a bloody good hiding. If they break them it's data for the engineers, no problem with that whatsoever. But "economy with the actuality", exaggeration and sloppy reporting is piss poor because their comments become lore. Their comments become what those of us who own the cars spend valuable drinking time defending and denying to mates who stand with an eyebrow raised while scratching their chins.

I think it's just a big ego trip with these people. TG say something, 5th gear respond with the same old b-llocks, it's like they have to. For most cars they test, we could script exactly what they will say, Alfa Romeo, lovely looking, great engine but watch the electrics, total shit. BMW, well put together, dodgy styling but get an M5, and so it goes on!! And what was 5th gears car of the year?? Porsche Boxster, how bloody obvious!!! And as they are giving one away in their competition, not even an 'S'....tight gits!!

Well, I for one am proud to still possess a mind of my own, where I am not influenced by cynical bias on almost every program, I am not fooled by ringing in to vote for the 'reality TV shows', making people believe it's their choice, and I certainly am not fooled by very biased reviews from TV programs, who pander to the lowest common denominator every time. I love my car for how it makes me feel, I don't love it because I see it at the latest 'fashion accessory', probably why FG gave it low marks, not enough toys and trinkets that are 'soooo cooool to have' for them, idiots!

Notice this year, with the additional budget they have for an hours programme they've been able to vote a sports car rather than a family car as the best overall.
Now do they fund it from the calls, or does the car come as a gift from Porsche, who know that by giving the "best car" away sales will be improved further (and the car probably only costs £20k perhaps to them), and the proceeds go the the production company and Jason's bear stylist - would love to know...
However if Horatio Pagini was to do the same and I was to enter and to win it, I'd happily go back on all the accusations above. You could call me a hyprocrite, but with a Zonda in the garage I wouldn't care!
PS I know the new Boxster is a good car, so please no arguments about that!

People should remember that these shows are *entertainment*, not impartial advice on car purchase. Your average Toyota-purchasing numpty isn't going to watch either, and the vast majority of the cars "reviewed" are way out of the reach of the average punter (don't forget that PH readers are not average punters - if they were, many of the mass car manufacturers would have gone out of business years ago.)
And as for Fifth Gear, if they're going to have an hour long show, could they have an hour's worth of material? Just stretching the half-hour show into an hour is pointless and boring. Like that fat git presenter who needs a haircut.
At least TG makes you laugh. Even when they too have items which are *way* too long, like last weeks Veyron nonsense. Which the 'plane would have won hands down if James May had an IFR rating. And despite devoting most of the show to it, we *still* didn't get a proper look at the car.

Thing is I've got a mate whose firm produce the software for the voting systems used on these shows and he regularly has to be there on the night to manage it all, so I'm afraid the choice of the public really is that.
Just remember most people are very stupid indeed...
