My immobiliser has been giving me grief for a while now. It would sometimes take half hour to switch off. Very bloody annoying when your in a busy petrol station.
Anyway I finally got round to calling a firm in canvey who were recommended to me.
His coming down tomorrow to my work, ripping the old one out and fitting a nice new automatic one for under £200.
I thought this sounded like a bargain especially when the removal cost 75.
Can post his number if anyone is interested.

Is the new immobiliser Thatcham approved ? Your insurance company might require that it is. Does sound good value providing it is up to the standard.

Its a Toad Power P or something like that.
Its definately thatcham approved so I have no need to worry. Not that the insurance people would need to know its gone anyway.

I hate electrics and the least amount on my cars the better.

Unfortunately it is not just the alarm that has to be Thatcham approved. When you insure/come to claim the insurers will ask for a Thatcham certificate if an aftermarket alarm has been fitted. This has to be issued, stamped and signed for by an approved Thatcham Alarm fitter/centre. So if your mate is Thatcham approved then bargain and I'm sure that he'll get a load of work, I know I wounldn't mind a new alarm, if not, then it's not Thatcham approved.

Hi Chris
The alarm works fine and they are not touching that as far as I know.
The chap told me earlier it will come with all the certificates.
Its never occured to me before but my insurance has never asked for proof on the old
alarm / immobiliser.
His not a friend, was just recomended. Funny part is I have the same name as his dad so I had to ask for discount as Im family. And when I call them now I say its his dad calling.

Check with the insurer Dave. Mine asked me for the certificates. Unless it's a factory fitted one, I've always had to produce certificates.

Hi Dave,

We wanted to put an imobilliser on the V8S after it got stolen (Old one not much good eh?)I fitted a Toad power key and it's brilliant. It works on a transponder so no fagging around trying to find the right button in the dark....just put keys in ignition and start. It's that easy.

The price sounds about right as I bought two units on fleabay and the units were not that expensive. It might have even been from the same guys as they were in Canvey.

As for the Thatcham bit, everyone is right about the fitter needing to be accredited but ClassicLine require no alarm at all, let alone a Thatcham one. I just fitted it as common sense....I didn't fancy going through all that crap again if it was stolen. The other thing to remember is that Thatcham accreditation is just that, an accreditation. It doesn't mean that they are any good. I had a Power Key "professionally" fitted to our Mk2 Golf and when the footwell filled up with fluid I realised that the monkeys had nicked the rear wash/wipe pipe when they "hacked" into the loom. The job was rubbish but I have the all important bit of paper and it was needed on that car. If I say so myself the installation on the "S" was a work of art but I have no paperwork for that.

Hope that helps

Hi Emma
Thanks for the reply.
Sorry but to the fact your last immobiliser was stolen, how the??? what the???
Why???
Some strange people in this world!

Like you I wasnt bothered about it being 'approved' or anything like that, but if it makes my insurance cheaper or keeps it valid then Im all for it lol.
