Discussion
Investment in Public Transport or Fuel Tax Cuts, you decide......

You guys have got this wrong if you ask me.
Investment in public transport will see less people on the roads. The rail network is a joke - it's no wonder people use cars instead. Sure, cheaper petrol might be great but think about how much longer it'll take you to get to work etc and you'll probably lose out economically in the end due to loss of leisure time/stress etc.
Not as simple as it first seems if you ask me...
Cheers,
Rob.

done the job.
no guessing what i'd like to see, a mighty cut in fuel taxation. i do love giving gordon brown 80p out of every £1 i spend at the pump, makes my day pass knowing that he will spend it in a way, on something that might do some good and be 80p well spent. possibly even on some road infrastructure, filling in pot holes on our undermaintained public highways. maybe even altering a few of the country's most dangers road junctions, elliminating fundamentally unsafe road/rail crossings.....but perhaps not, he'll probably just stick it into the big piggybank and either pay off some of the borrowing(unlikely) or fund more of his social projects with little returns.
just imagine if GB was an invester on Dragons' Den? i'll invest in that and that and that...

Cheers,

I disagree. Driving a car is much cheaper and quicker than public transport. And seeing as public transport is run by private companies, I see no reason why as a taxpayer who never uses it I should be expected to pay for it. Unless people without a car wouldn't mind contributing to my VED? Nope? Ok.

If everybody used cars and public transport was scrapped the country would grind to a halt, thus we can partly consider public transport as a public good as we all benefit from people using it - not just those on it. You benefit from decreased congestion etc etc...

Rob.
Use public transport? Are you mad? I would much prefer to sit in my own little capsule in the morning rush than next to some smelly middle aged woman with whiskers (or is that just where I live?) Public transport is over priced for what you get and HIDEOUS. I took a tram the other week (never been on one so gave it a go) and there was a pool of something that looked remarkably like urine, and the smell matched too.
Dunno about anyone else but I don't p1ss in the car...*eugh* my skin is crawling...

Spends too much on road-building and not enough on alternatives to the car. This affects people without cars most.
And why would I care about people without cars? They're obviously life's underachievers anyway
If they stopped subsidising public transport, and designed roads to be car-centric, we'd have less congestion, and people without cars would be able to afford to become motorists.

Exactly get me to work nice and quickly please,
Plus if we could all use the trains etc more, weekends for the cars, and those little old grannies in middle lane etc, will go by trains and buses on the weekend.
perfect.

"Ring and be a chav" is a perfect example. The government contracts through its agency with the "Ring and ride providers" they in turn contract out most of the work to taxi companies who then subcontract to self employed drivers. Much easier if they just scrapped ring and ride and shoved the pension up. Pensioner phones taxi and pays bill. Job done.

Its not quite so black and white. I fail to see why I should pay anything towards public transport. If there are social benefits to having a public transport system, and its recognised that its impossible for the country to run purely on public transport alone, then it should also be recognised that private transport has a social benefit - therefore people on public transport should contribute to the cost of private motoring.

Not so. We had a lengthy bus strike in Sheffield a while ago.
The expected influx of cars didn't happen...
The city was quiet....
And the air was sweet......
People found that 3 or 4 in a taxi cost less than the bus......

Doesn't quite add up in the real world though. People who take public transport, on average are poorer than people who can afford to run a car. There is a reason the motorist is mercilessly mugged by cameras, petrol stations and the DVLA, it's because everyone knows we can afford it

Not quite true - the tram here costs £2.75 to get to Medowhall (not too far really) In my minds that is extortionate and lengthy considering it costs me about 50p to do the same trip and takes half an hour less...A train ticket to london costs £60, I can do it in about £20 of fuel. Public transport is over priced and is preying on people who maybe can't afford a car giving them no option but to pay the stupidly high prices.

Yeah your right, public transport is over priced, my original argument still stands though, the people that frequent public transport on average are poorer than those that run their own car. Its a bit like yes-car-credit or ocean finance really
