Following on from the Shooting Animals thread, how does one go about getting a shotgun and licence?

I've been clay pigeoning before and loved it - I'd really like a gun of my own for this. My question is how do you go about getting a licence for one?

Go the Police station, get a licence application and all the regulations.

Fill in the application

Following the regulations you'll need a safe that can be securly mounted out of general visitor eyeline which can be locked and is secure.

Once you've done this you get a visit from the Police to check the above is all in place, your application will be processed and checking done etc.

Once you get issued your licence you go to a gunshop and buy a gun.

This is how is used to work certaintly, may have changed with the new gun laws etc so worth checking.

No, it's needlessly complicated.

In some places, it's just walk into the market, pick up AK47, fire a few shots in the air then haggle over the cost and your done

I thought you had to have means to store the weapon and ammo in separate locked locations? This helps get round the 'right you bitch, my tea was ruined, so eat lead!' spur-of-the-moment scenario...

Wedg1e Villas came with such a facility; large steel box bolted through it's back panel into the strongest wall of the house, inside a cupboard; tied into the house alarm which has an autodialler on it... the previous owner was a Mr. Ryan

From memory, yes you do.

Also have to be prepared for a full background check, and be a member of a gun club, for which you have to have a gun, for whcih you have to be a member of a gun club.........

Think some regional police forces are tougher on reg's than others. I know a chap locally who was turned down because he omitted declaring a conviction on his application form. Now this was for assaulting his wifes boyfriend and as so fairly relavent(if understandable). The system in Lincs appears to say, "refuse if possible". Definately need to prove the need to own and keep a shotgun,(some gun clubs will hold guns on site for owners). Or obtain permission to shoot over land,V difficult in these times. Suggest join a Clay shooting club, borrow a gun to get some idea what type you prefer shooting with, Quite legal to use someones gun while under their supervision. Get 3rd party ins, and when you've shot for a while put your application in (this proves that your serious and not just on a whim!) If poss find someone who will vouch for you as being safe and proficient handling firearms, and declare every conviction however minor on your app'. Could also add "and as per your records" as this puts onus on them to check.
Clay shooting can be a great alternative to golf, just dont practice in your kitchen.

Which is totally contary to what the home office actually wants.............Good Luck.

www.basc.org.uk/content/firearmsdept......of course you have to be a BASC member, which is the FIRST thing you should do!

The shot gun must be locked away as mentioned before, but the cartridges can be stored elsewhere (say, in a garage as long as they're out of sight) they don't need to be locked away. A firearm (rifle) must have it's ammuntition locked in a seperate compartment in a cabinet but not shot gun cartridges.
It isn't as easy as you may believe to get a licence - the firearms officer will want you to have a good reason (and he may check this out..)why you want one and what you'll use it for. Not half as difficult as getting a firearms licence though, I have both.

Its a lot to do with where you live. Try applying for a licence in London. Slim chance. However in Somerset no problem. They tend to ask why do you need one (in London to rob a bank) or in Somerset (to shhot the odd rabbit/pheasant) simple really.

Then I stand corrected - as I said, was from memory, and it was a long time ago that my ex went through this........ (10+ years)
