Has anyone else noticed that nearly all the tyre inflator thiny-majiggies seem to be out of order or bust at the moment? Every petrol station I have tried so far either says out of order or should do as it takes air out instead of putting it in!!! Really bugging me now!

Oh and what annoyed me even more was a woman infront of me today using it who played damsel in distress as she couldn't use the machine. Took someone to go over to her and point out the huge OUT OF ORDER sign to her Kept me queuing for ages because I couldn't see the machine with her car there!

Yes I have noticed that - it's a PITA. I've bought a little compressor now that lives in the boot - and I do it myself.

I find they're out of order about 30% of the time.

When they're working, the pressure settings the previous users leave them at seem to indicate that everyone in Bedford inflates their tyres to 29psi, while everyone in Kempston inflates them to 30psi.

Yes, I've noticed this too. In High Wycombe I went to about 6 petrol stations and they were all out of order although 5 of them weren't marked so.

Finally got to one where it was working but it was such a waste of time *sigh*

My fronts are 31psi and rears 29psi. Maybe it depends whether they inflate the fronts or rears first. Don't forget varying confounds

You use the foot pump to pump up the tyre, then a proper quality gauge to get the right pressure, ignore the one on the pump or buy a pump that doesnt have a gauge on it all.

What I dont understand is why no one has thought of making a foot pump with a quality gauge on it in the 1st place.

Yup, you ain't alone. If they're not out of order or letting air out of my tyres, I have to PAY to put air in! It's air FFS! Before you know it, Gordon Brown will be taxing us for the air we breathe!

And yes, as others have said, get a footpump to put in your boot. They're not expensive, Take 5-10 mins to bring your tyres up to pressure, and you don't have to faff about on the petrol forecourts

Haven't I seen a gadget that connects to the exhaust pipe and uses that instead of air...

These are great....

until you get a flat tyre and it has mysteriously broken while in the boot. I've had this happen twice so have gone back to a traditional foot pump - although it had got a double pump which means you have to weigh twice as much to use it!

Yeah I know how they work, I own two of them

I find it easier just to plug in the electric one and then let it do it's work while I check the fluid levels.

I've got no chance. If I had a foot pump one it'd have to be quite light to press! Else I'd have to keep jumping on it!!
