Gearbox Oil

Ok, I'm doing an Oil change, gearbox/diff/engine, so was wa=ondering what gearbox oil to use in the Rover Box?? Just so I can order it.

Castrol SMX is good stuff - don't use atf, or anything with EP additives - its not kind to the synchros. Mines actually got Mobil 1 in at the moment.

AFAIK, ATF was specified only because of customer complaints (US applications?) about crunchy boxes when cold.

I think RPI are referring to the LT77 box. This is what Tremec recommend for the T5 & T56

Been sprinting and overstressing the LT77 box on ATF for years. Not had a synchro gone. Done other things like broken gear teeth and shafts but not a synchro.

According to RPI, Castrol SMX is auto fluid as in auto transmission fluid as in ATF. Except that it is synthentic as opposed to non. Which is all a bit strange as all the ATF's I've seen on the shelf are synthetic...

Right so ATF is the stuff then. Just need to find some 80/140 diff oil and i'm off.

80/140 diff oil is for btr diffs if you have a rover box you should have a gkn diff unless its been changed ?

To clarify, what is says on the bottle in my garage is "Part synthetic manual transmission fluid". I believe that there is now a fully synth. version. Rated at 80W90.

Just out of interest, do you drive the monster Wedge to sprints? I appreciate that your box must be under significantly more stress that in an unmodded car, but I wonder if those encountered in single hot lap situations are overall less than those experienced in, say, spirited everyday driving for 50 miles, or a trackday, particularly from a temp. point of view?

The 520SE is fully road legal and gets driven to events. I have a small trailer that it tows with a set of slicks and wets. Drive to the event, undo trailer and tow bar, bolt on slicks and play. Car does about 5-6000 miles a year like this. Does 0-60 with trailer in under 5 seconds BTW...

It does full track and test days as well. The first gearbox lasted about 100K miles. It's only just been replaced with a custom close ratio version with straight cut gears in perparation for the supercharger...

The car is a real street racer and not a pamper the car on a trailer type cos it's too fragile...
