My Boss's G/F's employers are having a Christmas Do - Black Tie (strictly for the Top level head hocho's) The Bosses G/F works with the Directors etc and is invited/expected to attend along with her partner - my Boss

Not a problem you might think...................

Herein lies the problem:

We work as contractors for the company - we have been there 6 years,
The bosses G/F has been there 9 months - she is not responsible for and has no direct influence over our contracted work.

In the last 3 months our contracted work for this client has trebled - again the boss's g/f has had no direct influence over this. (although she was at one meeting when increasing our hours was discussed)

No-one knows (at the moment )that the Boss and his GF are an item (it is known that they know each other - both of them worked for her previous employer (we were contractors there)- she got the job on her own merits, he had no influence!
The Boss has been in the building on business several times and there paths have crossed - they both acted in a proffessional manner!

He is bound to be recognised at the party and is quite worried about people putting 2 & 2 together and coming up with 6!!!!

Should he go or not??
What would your reaction be if you suddenly found out tht one of your high ranking employees was in a long term relationship with a contractor and neither of them had mentioned it????

Tricky.

In my contract as a permie, relationships are covered, mainly to prevent one person working for another leading to favouritism etc.

May be best if the GF clears it with her boss.

There main issue I see is that the relationship wasnt divulged earlier, where something is hidden it often appears that there is something to hide.

There may be nothing underhand at all, but the perception that there could be perhaps the issue.

I dont think there is a good way of it coming out at this point, unless there is NO connection at all between the recruitment of the contractor and his girlfriend, and that that lack of a connection is transparent and clear to any observer.

Could be entirely smiley, or could be very nasty.

I would make a polite and plausible excuse for non attendance.

Could she take him as her guest/escort rather than boyfreind. She could ask their permission "I cant think of anyone to take but that contactor guy might like it" etc etc

Bit sneaky especially if it comes out that thy are seeing eachother
