Ouch! I'd be very, very suprised if nobody was seriously hurt from that on!

killed two people

article said:

At first officials said track failure or a breakdown with the tram itself could have been to blame. But then witnesses said the driver had taken the 90-degree turn that leads into Karlovo namesti — heading westbound from the Stepanska stop — at an unusually high speed. The speed limit there is 15 kilometers (nine miles) per hour. Police later said the tram was going 32 kilomers per hour. The front car of tram 22 stayed on track, but the back car lurched off.

Crikey. Thing is, I bet that tram has been doing that corner at that speed for years, and nobody ever mentioned it

the article quoted a few people as saying that the driver was driving like a mad man that day.

Urgh, is that one of the bodies you can see being left behind at the end?

Maybe it's the way I'm looking at it, but the arse end swinging out where it did looks a little wrong, it straightens up, and then swings out which seems to defy gravity, if it swang out immediately after the turn it would look a bit more real......I'm thinking it may be a bit of a hoax video.......but the article seems to corroborate it......

It just doesn't look right to me.

I know what you mean, but 'cos its (literally) on rails, it could be trying to go sideways and only went when some other factor (e.g. joint in the track) allowed the wheels to ride up over the rails?

Absolutely, lateral forces have to be at work to make it swing out, but to swing from straight in that sort of an arc seems odd.

I suppose the front bogey was still "locked" into the rails, making the back pivot 'round in what looks like an unnatural manner (compared to a car, which would be sliding at the front as well)? If you watch the front of the carriage, you can see that it pivots around the bogey and eventually drags the rear back in line with it.

Looks like it jumped the rails at the points. The way the carriage behaves reminds me of some of the photos of the Potter's Bar crash where the carriage landed on the platform.

Speed kills well in this case it looked like it was going to fast, although the patchy video might be exagerating it a little.

Once saw a car get hit by a Tram in Milan, car was mangled, the Tram wasn't even noticeably scratched - you don't to crash with a tram

Looks to me as if the rear bogey turned sideways once it was free from the tram lines, effectively giving that carriage rear wheel steering. I guess it might have carried on in a straight line for a while until the bogey hit something that caused it to start turning.
