Just sold my first item on Ebay and was contacted by this fella. Says he wants me to ship to Nigeria and that he has payed me via Paypal (the proof being the receipt below). Now being a trusting soul I wrote back saying that his Ipod would be in the post monday. Then I took another look at the invoice. Badly spelled, pretty poor graphics and sent from an address that was xxx@_paypal.com <<xxxxx@deliveryman.com>>. Having spoken to Paypal they have confirmed its false, and zero funds have been deposited in my account.

I know I'm naive, but do we just have to put up with sh!ts like this??

What a cock!

If you want to sell on eBay then I'm afraid you will get some scammers - as you get used to selling on there you can spot scammers and cancel their bids from your auction. Also you can set your auctions up so that overseas bidders cannot place any bids.

Take the '3' out of your name and replace it with a 'c' - that's what's happened, mate.

There are options in your seller's account to bar people with negative feedback from bidding on your auctions, also you can bar people not resident in the UK from the same.

To anybody trading on E-bay/Paypal download their toolbar now if it isn't lit up GREEN it's a scam....

And NEVER give out your personal information replying to an e-mail that APPEARS to come from e-Bay/Paypal

Thanks for the tips guys!

Have you seen emails like this before. When I rang paypal the woman started laughing, "oh its a spoof email" she chortled at the dumbass!

Finally would you write something choice to him (or her - I don't want to be sexist) or is that not 'good' practice?

I sent the following message to a Nigerian scammer.

He did not respond, but I was attacked for quite a while thereafter......

Dear Barrister Williams

Thank you for your offer of untold wealth.

Please follow these instructions carefully :

(1) Load printer with good quality, sharp-edged paper

(2) Print this reply several times

(3) Remove paper from printer

(4) Place all pieces of paper in one pile

(5) Roll the pile of paper into a tight cone, pointed at one end

(6) Insert pointed end sharply up your arse

(7) Repeat after me "I am a cheap, thieving bastard and the bogeyman is
going to get me"

Yours sincerely

The bogeyman

Wish I had that many hours in my day!

The other one I've seen on ebay was a seller with a really high feedback. When you looked at who left it though, there was about 20 or 30 accounts all recommending each other after buying made up auctions for 1p. Could have been easy to have not looked, trusted the positive feedback and sent your money.

Nigeria is THE place for scams. Anything from Nigeria should be binned immediately, period.

If he actually won the auction and actually paid you by PayPal, you will get a proper e-mail from PayPal or eBay saying so. To be sure it's not a scam e-mail, go to www.paypal.com, log in to your account and see if funds have arrived.

Can you post the item number or link so we can take a peek?

Wait!

Tell him that you need some money to pay UK customs electronic equipment export charges (I just made that up in case you are in any doubt at all).

Keep promising him the Xbox and coming out with reasons why he has to pay the charge.

You take his money.

He gets the Xbox when he's paid up!

There was a thread ages ago with a link to a website where someone did exactly this. They were selling a lap top. After getting the money they posted a hand drawn picture of a keyboard and a picture of a mouse labeled "mouse"

I don't think that's going to happen: he's no longer registered.
