After all the ranting I've been doing this evening, I decided it was time to have a nice girly chat to a mate. All very well until my spending habits came up...I got chastised for buying *unnecessary items* purely because I wanted the bag it came in...WTF?? actually..I needed (well, liked...) my purchases and proved it...but it made me start thinking - how much would someone actually pay for a carrier bag from a *posh* shop..to ebay I went and these are my shocking findings...

LV paper carrier - bidding currently at £6!

2 Jane Norman bags (still to work out who this is, but have seen lots of art students carrying one..)£4.05

The best one..with a bit of a bidding war (16 so far) is...Jane Norman again - a limited edition black carrier bag - hardly used!! £17.26!!! I KID THEE NOT!!

What is wrong with people?? and more to the point..what do you do with said carrier bag when you have bought it...and surely for £17.26 you can go into the shop, buy something small - get the bag (if you really want it that desperately) AND have some change??

I'm truely bewildered

I think Sainsburys still give you a penny if you use your own bag

I've heard of incentives but that's not one.

However, some bags are biodegradeable. I had a Tescos one once and kept some old clothes in it - and it disintegrated... (not delayed BO I assure you!)

I seem to remember a very used Tesco's carrier going on eBay for £4.39.

And I once sold an empty fag packet for £3.79

Nutters on eBay the lot of them!

All those who don't know about jane norman can't have teenage girls in the family. Last year's craze involved jn bags as school bags, even the teachers got in the act, the ones who wanted to be trendy. Yes people went into the shop to buy something just for the bag. Sad in the extreme.

I wouldn't pay anything for a carrier bag. Why don't we get brand named paper bags? Don't the americans still use paper?

Local Waitrose have a stock of cardboard boxes left over from shelf stacking that the customers can use.

Much better idea - why don't more supermarkets do this?

ahhh so now I know what Jane Norman is...and the craze of carrying the bags around is still HUGE in Sheffield (even nosed around the union to see if they were giving them out - just couldn't work out where on earth they were all coming from)

What really puzzles me is why (in most cases) a girl doesn't get a bag big enough for all her school/uni things anyhow. Even the most stupid of students can work out that an A4 folder wont fit into something you struggle to get your keys in...

And the comment about Louis Vuitton being the chavs brand du jour? damn right...I've even seen real LV's being paraded around these parts by the chavviest of the chavs - so thats where our hard earned tax is going! Mebbe the government will bring in the style conscious benefit so all our little chavs can have their high end branded goods - just so they don't feel left out (equal opportunities and all ) Then again mebbe I'm just bitter because I'm at my overdraft limit (again...) because I'm trying to fund a degree thats gonna make the country a better place to live in...

Because they sell 'em on to cardboard carton dealers.

Yes, they're folded flat, sold on and re-sold. There's a company near us do this.

Wagon loads of clean re -usable 2nd hand cardboard boxes travel far and wide to be resold and refilled.

Although, I suspect that the big supermarkets may re-distribute and re-use their own cartons, cutting out the middle man

The sooner they start charging for carrier bags the better. In Ireland you are charged euro 0.15 per bag and the environmental effects have been amazing. Everyone brings there own now. I get looked at strangely when I produce long life bags in my local waitrose.

Bag tax - yeah
Smoking ban - yeah
Counci Tax - boo

I dont think they do that anymore.

I have a couple of reinforced carrier bags from Sainsburys that I use each time and never get 2p back.

As for how much 75p but they have lasted 4/5 years. My small way of doing something for the environment by not using 8/9 plastic bags on each trip.

That explains it then.

I suppose the "pen" that holds them takes up a lot of room. It'd still be bloody useful though.

The few places I've asked for a box to transport stuff home in have all answered that they're not allowed to store them as they're a fire hazard. Odd, that, as they must go somewhere between being emptied and disposed of / sold / whatever...

And they complain about the lack of imaginitive play by children these days, I remember when the food shopping came home I couldn't wait to play with the boxes, get in in and it's a car or a ship, put it on your head to be a robot, set fire to it and play towering inferno
