OK guys (and girls), I need some low down on my next choice of wheels. Previously owned a Griff 500 for 7 years, had to sell.. now own an A4 Quattro 3.0 Avant .... Time to go back to something special

Choices (in no particluar order)
Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante. has to be V12!! (2001 models about in price range)

TVR Tuscan mk2 Convertible ( what's the score now, they're all 4.0 but 360 or 400hp.. what else is fitted for the extra cash?)

Porsche 996 TT '02 ish (pushing the limits on price somewhat!!)

Porsche GT3 mkII (or mk I if someone can convince me that a 6 year old car is ok?)

TVR Sagaris

Lots of questionss.. but hard earned cash.. need to get it right! Let me know your experiences if you've owned any of the above Cheers....

I suspect in here you will find something of a strange bias towards the TVR's.

Personally I can do without the softop element (despite having had a Chim for 2 years) so my vote would go with a Saggyarse.

If you can afford the Sagaris, that would be my choice.

Forget the DB7 if you can't get a newer aston I wouldn't bother...

As for the rest I'd certainly enjoy trying them all out! then vote with your heart not your head.. you can forgive so many short comings if you do it for love. mind you that then brings the aston back into contention I suspect..

... Saggy is v.tempting but even though I live in NE Scotland the roof down thing still does it for me .. fond memories of my Griff me thinks!

The thing that puts me off TVR is the 300 mile round trip from up here (Aberdeen) to down there (Stirling) to get it serviced every 6k... also still worried about the new stuff's track record.. I have test driven a S2 Tuscan S and a T350 and both had small but niggling problems... Griff was faultless for 7 years!

GT3 appeals ...maybe should post this on the Porsche site also!! Anyone driven a GT3 and Sagaris back to back..?

A mate has a 996 GT3 MK II Ltd Edition 1 of 5 with 415Bhp and 4 wheel drive.... we've done a back to back with my 4.5 LW RR Cerb 2001....

He drives the Porsche as his only car so it's very usable and it's not really cost him nearly as much to run. 2 services and rear tyres in the last 12 months.

However in his own words "sh!t it's quick" was a sentiment applied to the Cerb rather than the Porsche. We found the TVR more involving to drive but also more stressful, the Porsche can eat up the miles (He has comfort Pack) and can really touch 200mph...(was in another country at the time where it's legal).

On the flip side I don't get out in the Cerb as much as I have a company car but it's cost a pretty packet to run. (This may not apply to new Sag with Waranty).

IMHO go drive them both you'll very quickly polorise your views.

BTW. I also was looking at AM DB7 and Fezza when I foind the Cerb.... After driving the 355 TB I was not impressed also the servicing costs for both are ASTRONOMICAL compared to TVR's. In the end neither were special enough. TVR's have that grin factor.

This is good info.. thanks
...355 Fezza already ruled out on grounds of running costs. I think you just made my mind up on the DB7 too.

Anyone else got any opinions on the new Tuscan II Convertible or 996 Turbo?

rumour has it that there may be a TVR outlet (factory or independent) in Aberdeen in the not too distant future. As far as I'm concerned this is certainly just a rumour, but some of the Aberdeen folks may know better. Maybe post a query in the Scotland forum?

Porshe 996 Turbo.... BAMF automobile.. it's got the wide arch apeal that the GT3 lacks.

Tuscan II Convirtible..... well let me put it this way, could you see this car in bad boy's film.... (although a coleague does have one on order.. don't tell him I said this)

Obviouly my 2ct. I would be more interested in a Sag (new or nearly new).

I did exactly that earlier in the year. Didn't buy either in the end.

I was really, really torn between which to get. The Porsche dealers were complete pr!cks, but the car, well its amazing. The TVR dealer (Gorners) were brilliant, and although the car was still being run in, could tell the Sagaris was also something special.

My decision changed from day to day, each having good & bad points. However.... if I had ended up buying one, I think it would have been the GT3 mainly due to the fact that I was interested in doing some track work & this is something TVR's do struggle with in comparison.

I am sure people will argue that the Sagaris is as good on a track at the GT3, and maybe it is. In fact it may even be quicker. The GT3, however, will go round & round all day with no problems. The 2 Sagaris I have seen at track days have both had overheating problems in the first few hours

Jules you are mentioning all the cars I thought of (apart from the Tuscan 'vert as it wasnt an option earlier in the yr and Im a previous Grif owner. I chose the Sagaris and everyday I think "I could be running a Vantage now" or "I could have bought a 911tt". Then I look at the Sagaris and I smile, even in sh1tty November weather, with wind and rain howling I smile to myself and cant help thinking Damn that looks good.

Purely obejctively it has to be the 911tt. The 996tt is the best car in the world, end of story. The trouble is the Sagaris is almost as good and that is enough to wipe out the objective lead!
Vantage Volante? Has the class and style of the Aston, but in the end it isnt in the same league as the above 2 as ownership and driving prospects.
911 GT3? Dont insult yourself.

So really it is between the TT and the Sagaris, you wont go wrong with either of them. Outstanding choices.
Of course if you do want the drop top, the Tuscan 'Vert it is your toy of choice, finally making the Tuscan the car it always should've been.

Between a TT & a Sagaris, personally the Sag. As DJC said, although the Porsche is the better car, it does it all so well, a bit too well.

Don't discard the GT3.

Back on the TT or Sag, TT's are now approaching early 50k's, against £45k for a nearly new Sag. However, running costs are a different story. The TVR, dependant on annual mileage, will be quite a lot higher due to 6,000 intervals.

I have owned the T350 for 18 months, in which time I have covered 18,500 miles. Total servicing cost during this period (including 1 full set of tyres) is just short of £4250.

I think you should go for a new Tuscan Convertible with 3 yr warranty, and see if you can get yourself a deal on servicing, eg half price for first few, or preferably free!

Dash layout of the drop top is IMO much beter than the Tuscan Mk II, it all seems v nicely put together, and if you like top down motoring, you'll miss it in the other cars!

I cannot deny an ubelievably moist desire for that Tuscan rag top, Barker liked it and from a sculptural perspetive, it's a damn sight cheaper than a Moore and probably more stimulating aesthetically!

So the Tuscan for starters.
