Or that even if the auction ended on 1st if he is queueing for 18 hours how will he know who won.

I have heard of people selling their places in the queue for a new car but not a physical queue in the street

Funnily enough a friend of my sisters got caught out by that one.

She thought she'd gotten a cheap Xbox for her boyfriend's birthday. How wrong she was, it was an Xbox, but just the case...

I never get why people get excited, in anyway shape or form, about a new games machine that's a tiny bit better than the last. It's not like this is a revolutionary new device that has never been seen before, where you might actually want to queue to get such an item.
It does however qualify as one of the best marketing gimmicks/ploys/cons of all time.Well done to whoever actually manages to create such a marketing tool.

Port WoW to the Xbox 360 and I will have one in the blink of an eye.

Till then, I will wait for the games to appear. All the shiney tech in the world cant provide the fun without the games there and the first generation of new-release games for any system are almost uniformly unimpressive (with some notable exceptions).

Currently playing Front Mission 2 on my PS2. Its a PS1 game...and damn good too!

Me neither and I'll be waiting for a bit before I get one but it's meant to be miles better than the previous Xbox and any other console available at the moment on the high street. Somebody told me that the hardware would cost in the region of a grand to put together yourself but I'm not sure if that's correct.

A quick search on slashdot (www.slashdot.org) will reveal a couple of news articles and discussions on X-ox pricing. I think the consensus was they were loosing around $150 on each core unit. But clawing some of that back on the harddrives, wireless controllers etc

Again IIRC (have a look on slashdot) Microsoft was advised to get rid of some of its massive cash pile and is punting these in as heavy loss leaders to try and get a presence in the home media centre market (which is where they see this going).

IIRC they lost about $2 billion on the Xbox1.

I get 'excited' over waiting to hear all the reports that come in over the latest machines, and then buying the best one when all the votes are in and saving half the price because a year has gone by!

And I save even more by buying one thats about a couple of months old and barely used, when the owner goes for the latest shiney toy on the market.

My Ps2 cost me about 50% of the retail price at the time, about 12 months after it was released. Tend to do the same with games.

Is that me being pikey? or simply being sensible?

sensible?

I think so! If the console/gadget is that good you will get loads of fun out of it no matter how much you pay!

Compared to the costs of the games, surely the console price isn't that significant? Can't say I like second hand controllers with bits of other peoples skin and sweat ground into the crevaces of the controller!
