Just bought some hard contact lenses. Had soft ones years ago but they were rubbish because they were toric. Decided to go for the hard ones and am now trying to build up the wear. It feels like 2 bricks in my eyes. How long before its starts to improve? I am on day 2 and going for 2 hours wear.

It took me about a week to get used to hard lense. They never really got very comfortable though, the daily disposables I use now are far nicer.

I wear gas permeable ones and had to build up usage over a period of days. It's not pleasant, I know. Just don't be tempted to wear them for longer to try and break them in quicker.

Been wearing GP hard lenses for 18 years. I can't tell they're there most of the time. I can't even remember whether they caused irritation to start with

I've worn hard, then gas permeable lenses for 26 years (I'm 34!) I do remember the agony of wearing them initially, but within months I seem to recall no problem whatsoever.

It's like mind over matter, just keep telling yourself that the lenses are MEANT to be in there.

If I can give up smoking I can get used to these. I think the problem is partly that the tears are meant to make up part of the vision correction cos I have astigmatism. Therfore the shperical lens does not totally fit my eyeball.

Used to wear GP, swapped to soft about 4 years ago, shudder at
the thought of going back - worth checking that you acutally *have*
to wear GP.

Christ, I thought hard lenses were obsolete!

Try Frequency 55 soft monthly disposables; you won't know they're in.

I don't know about nonegreens exact case but as a rather longsighted person with a bad astigmatism I was told I could only wear hard lenses (admittedly this was several years ago). I think that it's hard to correct for astigmatism with soft lenses so they aren't suitable.

this may not be true.

Anyway I just wear glasses all the time. I like wearing them! (if you're longisghted the lenses make your eyes look bigger. Girls like bigger eyes (but only if they are feeling reproductively inclined, not if they want a "manly" (read tttish) man).

Yikes.

I had hard gas permeable at school. Never got used to the damn things, hurt all the time and couldn't see properly. Just never wore them in the end. Switched to soft GP which were better but still never forgot I had them in.

A few years ago I tried again with dailies - fabulous, much better on the whole, although couldn't wear them for more than a few days in a row and long days were fairly unpleasant.

Back to wearing glasses now, one less thing to worry about.

Saw an item on daytime TV last month about some special hard lenses. You wear them during the night and after a week you have perfect vision during the day without them. Apparently after a month you will be able to go about 4 days without them and still see perfectly. They reshape your eyeball while you're asleep apparently! Yeuch!

Actually it sounds like a great idea. No surgery and no pain (ok a little uncomfortable at first but you're asleep) Not too expensive either. About £200 intial consultation then £30 per month after that.

How long can you wear contact lenses for... Do you have to give your eyes a rest after a few months?

Has anyone had their eyes corrected via a laser?

I wear toric lenses for astigmatism, and they're soft. I have no problem with them, wear them for about 12 hours a day. But usually don't wear them on Sunday like to give my eyes a rest one day a week.

Have worn these for over 2 years now, with regular checks at the opticians.

Yeah, soft monthly ones over here... only took a couple of days to get used to, it was the time it was taking for me to put them in that was annoying.. It can still be quite a while even a year on!

I don't think i'd go for the hard ones, these can be irritating on the eyes sometimes, especially if the AirCon is on

I had my one bad eye done last year and the Girlfriend had both hers done.
Would highly recommend it, although you will get the " no-one knows the long term effects brigade" something I/we am/are prepared to take the chance on. My mum was one of the first to have hers done many years ago and her eyes are still very good with no side effects.

I'm thinking of investing in that soon.. doesn't take long to break even from contacts at £15/month..

Especially with the Wonders of eBay
But would you trust them?!

Dave.
