I was in NZ earlier this year ...
The uk Post Office don't charge any commission.
You may not need to take much cash as the NZ atm's accept british cards - you get a pretty good rate. You are also likely to get a better rate by using your card to buy stuff there, rather than changing cash over here.

Draw money out on CC or switch.
CC (credit card) will charge interest for cash advances. But I didn't know that NZ ATMs will work with GB cash cards; thanks.
Simpo: I always get a few bucks here in the UK before travelling anywhere. Yes the ATMs work: but it depends on which card etc. You may *need* to use a Credit Card to get cash out there rather than your Switch (Maestro) Debit card. The fees aren't so much that you really need to worry about them.
In NZ you can pay for virtually everything on your credit card - with which you will get the best rate so you don't need much cash. You will be able to "top up" your cash easily using a Credit Card at an ATM. But when you very first arrive its nice to be able to pay for the taxi/postcard in the airport shop/sandwich and so on without needing to find an ATM first and hope its working!
My practice is to get £100 to £200 in whatever currency *at Heathrow* using my Switch Card. Job done. No need to plan in advance.

Best bet is to take GBP Sterling traveller's cheques and exchange them in NZ as and when you need money. I get mine from M&S, as they don't charge any commission. Well, they didn't last time I travelled abroad.
I was in NZ this time last year and found that WestPac bank usually offered the best exchange rate for cashing traveller's cheques, but all the major banks are near each other in the big towns/cities and their exchange rates are clearly displayed in the front window, so you can shop around. Currentcy exchange booths will normally fleece you (as does Theifrow Airport).
NZ ATM's will normally take GB debit cards, as they're all connected by computer nowadays anyway, so you can take some cash out when you land at the airport. Or, you can cash some traveller's cheques on arrival.

Just rest assured that NZ is an up-to-date modern country and no matter what you do, you'll have access to money.
If you start worrying about exchange rates and being charged, etc... then it'll start to impact the enjoyment of your holiday.
When you get there chill out, relax, and "have a Speight's on me!" that qoute will make more sense when you get there
