Its nice to hear about someone else keeping chickens. We have four blackrocks and two rhode island reds, one of which is a cockerel.

Very nice watching them scratching the ground or making coo-ing noises

Trackman are you talking hard feather asian bird or old english type for the old cock fighting :-) or pretty bird type competition.

I used to have 4 isa brown when I was yonger but now doing the free range (well after christmas) with a clever ladder so i don't have to close the coop everynight (thats the plan, see River Cottage). Should be keeping Cream Legbar for some blue eggs.

Neighbours have also just got Eglu apparently and People down the road have a lot of chickens in one of the fields (Black rock, light sussex, Brown Leghorn, I think) and he is releasing and incubating pheasants so its becoming more interesting.

Whats the spinny on the ladder thing? Its a PITA to rush home now the nights are drawing in to get the hen house closed.

Motherinlaw had the eglu thing, didn't stop one of the chickens from becoming a fox dinner.

Sorry I'm a retardo and don't know how to post pictures and its only dinky. www.rivercottage.net/CASContent/binaries/edibleprojects.200304272954.image.chicken.jpg
Its explained a bit more on here.
www.rivercottage.net/edibleprojects/article.jsp?ref=edibleprojects.200304272954
But instead of the coop on a post I bought a shed and cut the poop hole in the apex. If you don't want to lock them up you could always get a automatic door. www.chicken-house.co.uk/door_opener.htm/?a=g

I didn't think the eglus looked fox proof but it is a nice simple design. I think I prefer the Arks.

nope ours have only just started laying as they were bought at auction not so long ago as chicks. Only two are currently laying, and have been for the last three weeks.

They are producing an egg every day between them at the moment.

Was that from Ashford Livestock Market? Have they closed it now due to bird flu?

Yes and Yes.

Although my wife tells me that one of the hens didn't make it back to the hen house last night , so I guess we are now going to scour the garden for remains.

And check the trees.
