Battery Vent Pipe

Right, new battery fitted to the Griff.

HOWEVER

I cannot fit the venting pipe as its too cramped. The old battery was not connected to it either.

Am I stupid to leave it without a venting pipe attached ?

Cant find one on mine either but I can see rust on heating ducts and bits which I guess is corrosion from battery fumes so I think there should be one, regards, John

The vent pipe discharges hydrogen gas from the battery to the outside of the car to harmlessly blend with copious anounts of fresh air, rather than collect in an explosive mix inside the car. Anyone seen the pictures of the Hindenburg airship disaster.....

Get it connected ASAP!

I don't recall there being anything to connect the vent pipe to on the last battery I installed. Should I be worried?

No.

I haven't seen a battery with a vent pipe connection for years.

(And the Hindenburg burned the way it did because the fabric was doped with cellulose nitrate, not because of the hydrogen.)

Normally on the side of the battery (near the top) there is a plastic cover that can be prised out, a tube can then be connected.

When I changed my battery, the plastic cover was on the oposite side so I had to make a new length of pipe up! so about 3 hours later and a ache in the back I was finished
