Last night we had three odd calls. Upon answering the phone there is a fanfare and a recorded voice explains that it is BT's Messenging Service and there are messages waiting. I was naturally very sceptical - tried to receive a message, got another announcement and then put the phone down.

Anyone got a clue what this is about? Do BT have a messenging service? We are NTL anyway.

Damned nuisance.

I haven't had these specific calls, but get a lot of recorded messages saying that I have one a prize and to call the number back - not likely as it's probably about 3 quid a minute!

They also, although I've never actually heard one, offer a service where SMS messages sent to a landline are read by a recorded voice.

Could that have been it?

Sounds more likely to have been an autodialler / recorded message scam tbh though.

If you text any subscriber on their landline, 1571 will read the text message.

Its free and really rather natty.

The fanfare is indeed the heralding of a text message sent to your landline. Now I know new technology is often impressive, but I'm not sure it warrants a fanfare.

This is indeed the cause, try sending your landline a text and you'll understand all!

I had a seriese of these messages and it turned out to be messages from their line test system. Very dull!

Yep that's text messaging via landline , I had that from a family member to thank us for the evening out but she sounded more like a Dalek than Aunty Barbara we know! Dull is an understatement, and why can't people pick up the blasted phone and speak , instead of this texting lark all time aaaarghhh.

Ok rant over

The main point of it, as far as I can see, is so you can text your mates abuse which they then receive from an amusing robot voice

Oh aye and most amusing it is too

The dirtier the message the funnier.

Cheers,

Eric

If that is the kind of thing that floats your boat (it is mine thats for sure) online bank transfers are also completely uncensored so you can put (for example) "you f***ing c***" as the reference which will then appear on your mates bank statement

I can see me having great fun with this if there's no censorship

Someone sent me a text and i don't even pay for a land line and its NTL. It just started ringing and computerised voice. I put it down thinking it was some rubbish. Then twigged it had said something personnel and listened again. I don't think it does text talk.
