Does anyone here get their lenses online?

What websites can you reccomend?

I've just done a search and it seems that I can get my lenses (dailies) a lot cheaper online.

In particular, does anyone have experience of www.visiondirect.co.uk ?

Should I be suspicious of sites that don't ask for my prescription?

Personally wouldn't touch any product without an expert looking at me eyes, and suggesting an exact product. Your long term sight vs saving a few quid?
Perhaps an online site that asks for a prescription would be better, but not ideal, I suspect.

I use www.getlenses.com/index.jsp fair priced and I've had no problems with them.

I could buy the exact same lenses I currently get from optician, but for cheaper. Seems reasonable!

Absolutely, but keep getting them checked! Out of interest (now you have my full attention) what kinda difference are we talking here. I've just signed up for the visionexpress monthly's, costing £19 a month. Free replacement etc, etc....

As long as you still get your regular check ups from the optician you should be fine, they just supply it cheaper than than the inflated optician prices, the good ones always check the prescription with the optomitrist to make sure it is correct.

Well it depends how many you buy at once. Currently I get my lenses for £30 for 30 pairs as I don't wear them everyday. Online I can get the same lenses for £25 or much cheaper if I buy more. I'd quite like to start wearing them more often.

Thanks, I was only really intending to get the one box at the moment to last me until I go back to Dundee at Christmas time, then I'll prob just go to my usual optician for a test, then go from there.

Mark up at opticians less than online, however online is cheaper

ie Dailies to me cost £19.00 + vat + carriage
retail £18.80 from Asda
The optician can't compete with these prices

Opticians for years have not traditionally valued their professional time correctly, now we are being penalised by non professional outlets. Expect to see a large rise in professional fees in the near future, anyone for a £70 eye examination (this is about the true cost).

Personally I would not want to save a few quid for online lenses as I have found my Optician to be a great help and I have been very impressed with the service so an extra few quid so to speak is worth it.

Remember Its your eye's and its not always about saving a few quid.
My Optician is Excellent (IMO) and I would not sell out for a few quid when its something as important as your eyes.
I nearly lost my sight in one eye a few years ago and my Optician raised the concern initially - What Price can you put on that ?
I owe her so much as my Life and work would obviously would have been greatly affected.

For that alone, The Company she has worked for deserves my loyality as a customer.

Just my 2p Input but I am happy with my Local Service and Happy to pay a price which is slightly more than the net.

I use Frequency 55s from www.lensesbymail.com

I was sure my optician was over-prescribing, plus he sold me lenses that were uncomfortable. So I bought my own from the above site and reduced the prescription by 0.25. Excellent results! I have since reduced the strength twice more, and am back to where I was when I was 18. Plus, I can see close-up better. Hurrah!

I appreciate the need for an optician to spot possible problems, but I'm perfectly able to tell if I can focus on infinity. I'd like to do some fine tuning but they don't make 0.1 dioptre steps.

er, how do they supply the right ones, if they don't want to know your prescription ?

Two meanings of 'prescription'. One is the official bit of paper written out by an optician, the other is the strength of both lenses in dioptres. This is given on your existing pots of CLs, and also the diameter/radius if that's required. So you just order the strength you want.

I will still be going to my optician for check ups, but if I can get the exact same lenses that my optician sells, cheaper on line, delivered to my door, why not?

I used to be on a monthly replacement scheme with D&A, but I found the same lenses at Vision Direct for less than half the price, including solutions. Even though I'll now have to pay for my yearly check up it's still worth buying online.

Vision Direct were excellent; great prices and quick delivery. They do need your prescription though! They get the details when you are actually placing your order.

I have some mirrored contacts that where used in the film Pitch Black / Chronicles of Riddick

they are rigid gas permeable lenses which sit on top of soft focus dailies / one day contacts,
they are like mirrors in your eyes, people can see there self when they look at you, quite cool
especially for going to tescos or walking around the streets at night!

You can get them from 9mmsfx or fxeyes

Indeed why not, but as sales subsidise the professional work, all THAT will hapen is the fees will go up.
as alot of opticians are complaining to their suppliers, that the lenses cost more to them than the prices on some off these websites. Big bul discounts to supermarkets, is a very short term thing. it won't put opticians out of business, it will just put it onto fees.
