I have decided it's time to get another Lotus. I have always preferred the mark 1 and in particular the 111s due to the gearbox. If you were me would you go for the 160 sport or 111s?

for road use on a std car car then 111S...for a track day car that I intended to modify then a S160....both are great 'out of the box' cars...but with a slightly different focus....

Thanks Bogie, after looking at the picture of your car I must say a Mk2 111R looks good. How much was the conversion to your car and is it just black as it looks very good?

cheers

mine started life as a 2002 S2 Type 72 - this is a paint job really...black n gold as per the old Type 72 formula 1 car...its 'starlight black' which is gold flake in the paint...you can only see it on really sunndy days when the car is clean (i.e. not often!)

A base Honda conversion - 220bhp aspirated is around £9750, with Supercharger etc £13250 + options...then theres the rest of the car..yep Ive spent a ton on it...but it gives me what I want - very quick, great handling, useable daily and cheap to run compared to anything else that will hit a ton in 8secs and do 170mph

35mpg still, and tyres/consumable servicing as per a std Elise..in fact last service (post Honda) was cheaper at £90

www.maidstonesportscars.co.uk did the conversion - theyve done quite a few now...must be over 50 (probably over 100 Honda elises out there now altogether) ...they occasionally come up for sale 2nd hand bargains...otherwise getting a £15K cheap S2 and spending £15K on it is an option if you dont necessarily want a new Elise...but want one of the best performing .........

If you get an 111S, you will just be anoyed you didnt get a Sport 160. Looks so much better too as it rides lower, spoiler is more angled, wheels etc.... The VVC is better through for smoothness, but if you want a rough racer for the road, then get the 160, you will love the way it needs to be high up in the revs all the time to get the best form it, where as the 111s will perform but in a more relaxed style. I use it every day and its fine. Yeah a bit rough, but I like it like that. (the car that is ! )

To have a S160, you must also invest in a partial lobotomy. Tis worth it though!

S160 all day every day whatever the weather.... but that's just me..... Having said that, I make do with an S1 and I don't think I'd bother changing it

how about getting a 160S and putting the 111s gearbox into it? anyone done that? how much was it and did it improve it?

What could I do to the 160S to make it a bit faster without it costing me too much?

and finally what are the performance figures for the 160 vs the 111s?

thanks again guys, I cant wait to get one now!!!

Sport 160 all the way. It's a proper sports car, the 111S is a compromise and with the short gearbox will annoy the sh!t out of you on the motorway if you do anything over an hour.

If you're serious about a Sport 160 make sure you get the S version. Funnily enough I know someone who's selling a very nice one at the moment

Working old chap, you know that strange thing we all love to hate... besides, piooly can always be trusted to give the 160 a good write-up.

Mine's up for sale now, time for a change, much as I love it the things I want to do are best done in an S2 so it has to go

Blimey! Use the handbrake on that U-turn?

Tim's summed it up there: It's what you need the car for. 160 is very intense but the 111S is more of an all-rounder. Same with S1 v S2 and S2 111S v S2 135R etc.

If you're considering an S1 111S v a 160 then you must have made half of the decision already. Think about how you use the car, test drive a few examples (I say a few as a standard Elise is a rare thing indeed, let alone a freshly-geo-d one) and then decide.

Good luck!

There you go, if you are serious about a S160, you wont find many better! If I was looking for a S160, there are only 2 I would look at and the other is not for sale!

cheers for all your advice guys, all are great cars. I am going to give it more thought and get one after xmas. I had a MK1 111s for two years, used it every day and miss it. I also had a MK1 standard car back in 1998 which I also loved. I have had various cars including my current 996 TT and none are as much fun as a Lotus Elise in my opinion. Hence time to sell my Porsche and go back to real motoring.
