Local news, it's s**t
Discussion
I'm going to come across really harsh here, and it's really not meant to sound like that so please forgive me if I do. I've got Calendar news on here in the background, and I just want punch the newsreader in the teeth, she's really that bad.
Anyway, what gets on my tits even more is the complete pointless 'news' reporting that they're doing about the poor WPC who was shot dead in Bradford on Friday. I hope they send the f****rs down for life, and I have an incredible amount of sympathy for friends and family, but is there any need to go snooping around, filming her house, interviewing her family, speaking to her neighbours, and talking to her colleagues? What exactly is this achieving?
"Oh she was wonderful, such a nice person etc etc"
"She'd only recently moved here *cue panning across the front of her house*"
"Everybody liked her, she was an excellent member of the community"
Why do I need to hear this? Why are you wasting time telling me this stuff? You're hardly going to film people telling us she was an ignorant tosser who interfered with everyone's business ** are you!!!
It's the same for every bad event on the news these days, we get morons in front of a camera sprouting off the same shit, telling us stuff we really don't need to hear, and they call it informative television?
FFS - Get a grip. The media in this country, and probably in the rest of the world for that matter just hype things up unnecessarily half the time.
Rant over. Apologies if this has hit a nerve with the particular subject content.
** NOTE I know she wasn't, I'm just making a point

They just like to pretend they are concerned with public sympathy when they are really just pandering to the public's large voyueristic appetite for personal interest stories. That is to say, the public are a bunch of nosey, gossiping t
ts who want to know everything about everyone, being nice about it just makes it seem acceptable.
Look at all the popular TV shows, Soap operas, reality tv shows, talk shows, 'celebrity' news, all crap that panders to that direct market.
The only solution is to not watch it, your blood pressure will go down a lot...

This is just another attempt to whip the nation into the mass outpouring of grief yet again. Basically its because there are no real excuses left for the politicians to fail so they need to invent some chrisis or other to stop us from over analysing them.
You old cynic Nonners

I remember a year or two ago, there was a local news report on how some bint ordered a carpet for her front room and she had to wait ages for it to arrive! They filmed her floor boards and talked about her kids having cold feet!! Even my kids laughed at the total waste of broadcasting time!!
Dont get me started on local TV news, it's complete utter shite. eccles is quite correct, if the the big National news story is say a bomb in a foreign holiday resort, and it has been well covered on the main news, the local news will cover it again, show the same footage and repeat the story, the local link? well this is the 'Numpty' family from somewhere locally and they had freinds who know someone who flew over the country once. National political story, local link? no problem, our MP was in parliament today so we can repeat it. Bird flu, whats the local implication? Local TV news is 60% National news repeated with the least tenuous link imaginable, 20% local people objecting to something like a new supermarket (National chains = evil) or petitioning for a dog toilet, and 20% calling for speed cameras because someone was nearly hit by a car doing 18mph in a 30mph zone (but they wont report the actual lack of speed or be rational, just go straight to the 'think of the children' angle).
And of course, that hardy perennial, comes around every winter, THE MILLION POUND GAS BILL.
Cue sending a news crew around to the pensioners house, the crew have all the right equipment for a story like this, they carry their own one bar electric fire and tartan blanket to put into the shot of the poor impoverished pensioner shivering with a hot drink. They also carry lots of tasteless tat to put on the fireplace so it doesnt matter if its wealthy pensioner in a nice house, they can make it look crappy, winged horse is always in shot. Dont forget the tartan slippers and a photo of dear departed hubbie who fought in the war you know. Then we have the scripted interview and the old dear coming out with something daft like "I cant afford to pay it on my pension"...you dont have to you silly old cow, it's a billing error! it would be sorted with one phone call, but no, you go to the newsdesk with it.
I bloody hate local TV news.

Strangely, someone on another thread is asking why the media is going about George Best, rather than a now (sadly) dead soldier who nobody had heard of until yesterday.

its the same every year with exam results (they must be getting easier),every year now, we're getting the annual flu jab story, but this year with the added bonus of bird flu, even though its got nothing to do with it, every year we get a story about university places (and how some student from a council estate somewhere cant get into oxford with her 42 A* grades), every year you get the usual loony council not paying for the christmas lights story......god!, its getting so predictable!

I saw this on east midlands today last night!
the story was about a chap who'd received a bill for about 7 grand and it was the lead! they focussed on how concerned he was about the consequences if a pensioner received a bill like this...hmm, I guess they'd use their frigging loaf and ring up the utility company and tell them they f**ked up their bill! jeeeeez!

You might, but my mother's 84 and has Alzheimer's and doesn't know the difference between £70, £700 and £7,000. If I wasn't nearby to keep an eye on things, she's either try to pay it, or just sit and worry about it until they cut her off. She certainly woudln't be able to deal with a utility company like you and I would. One recorded menu list and she'd panic and hang up.

Yeah but in this case, the old fella had enough nouse to phone his local TV station, be interviewed (which included come acting lessons). So, I imagine he wasn't going to pay the bill because of his mental condition.
Yup, Calendar can be really toss sometimes. Complete and utter news for the sake of news. They can report some real junk, worse still when they go on about a crap story for like 5 mins.
Ah well, Sky+ installed tomorrow, so can hopefully watch Norm Abrham making some furniture at around the same time instead
Yay!

Sounds like the UK media have been taking lessons from local channels in the US. They always have some sort of advert that attempts to "sucker you in to watching"...
"Breathing air could be dangerous for your health. Story at 11"
...and it always ends up being some hyped up crap. We just call it "the bad news".

They had this story in the Anglia region last week, only it was so good that they followed it up in the next few days. Still, it beats the one they had on halloween where some bloke gave out pumpkins in some village, that was worth a full 5 minutes of coverage.
