Stepper Thingy

Can any body advise me please.. removed & cleaned the stepper earlier today,
on close inspection the cone end with spring is fixed (no movement).
a) Is this normal or should this have a free & easy movement up & down on the spring?
b) Is the electrical operation variable or a direct in & out like a solenoid?.
c) Dependant on answers a & b, where can I buy one urgently ?

PS - DO NOT over tighten - just over finger tight! I snapped mine off (the stpper motor!)and needed to get the remains extracted

It will appear to be fixed. It drives in & out in use but unplugged it won't move. Don't forget to clean the seat. Not so easy as cleaning the cone but just as important. Don't, and I mean don't over tighten it when reinstalling. They neck off all of a sudden and leave you crying on the garage floor.

Hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread for a moment Steve.
I just took my stepper motor to clean it as the idle was irratic and it looked worse than a chimney sweeps brush with thick black deposits falling off of it. Is this normal?

Yes! the soot is normal but

NO! it should be clean metal, give it a rub over with 000 wirewool, and a squirt of WD40 all over including the plug.

Hence cleaning the stepper motor.
