I'm thinking about investing in some Winter Tyres (for S2 Exige) as I'm currently running on the A048's.

Does anyone have any recommendations about what to go for?

The handbook suggests Pirelli Snowsport or Bridgestone something or another..

Do I really need them?

You need them if you are ot happy about using "slicks" in wet and icy conditions.

I use the bridgestones, and I really like them. Lotus are recomending a new tyre, I am not sure what it is, ask Ameyc.

You have to be sure you get the good bridgestones. Bridgestone make many "flavours" of potenza and only one is specified for use. Go to protyre opposite Macro, they are very good and used / recomended by westover!

Toyo T1R's. Just fitted 195/50/15's £32.50 each to the fronts and 225/45/16's £95 each to the rear. A bargin and massive grip wet or dry. Cant believe how good they are..

New Lotus tyre is the yoko AD07 LTS. This is replacing the bridgestone Potenza on all new cars.

If it's not your only car (so you're not forced to use it daily), I'd just leave it in the garage when the weather's nasty, saving the hassle and expense of two sets of tyres and potentially spare wheels too.

A lot of people say 48s aren't that bad in the wet but don't do standing water very well. I don't think there's any tyre that will do "well" on a lightweight Elise/Exige in the snow and ice

I have spare wheels with Yoko A039s fitted for the winter in 195/50/16 and 225/45/17 - thats what you need on an S2 Exige.

You could get the Toyos in those sizes too, some people like them...I tried a set and the sidewalls flex too easily (you can feel it) wet grip is great, dry grip a world apart from what you are used to with A048s ...the A039s are better...whether they are 2x the cost better to you is up to you ...Toyos are great for the cash...Yokos are like £650 a set, and last 1/2 as long

personally i say forget new tyres
just stick with the a048 and drive to the conditions.

a few month ago i drove on the motorway in some of the heaviest rain ive ever seen
the motorway literally was like a river.
perfect conditions for acquplaning

i slowed down to 30 and was fine.

Its all about caution and adaptiong to the conditions in winter or heavy rain

Thanks guys - you are a wealth of knowledge!! Decisions decisions...keep the suggestions coming! The Toyo's seem 'too' cheap, but if they perform well then that's a bonus.

FORCED? No forcing required to use it daily

yup - agreed ...I do this too even with tyres that can clear water...thing is A048s only have 5mm of tread to start with so margin for error isnt great I find that in the Elise its natural to slow down more than in a 'normal' car anyway as you can feel everything thats going on with the tyres...in my other car - Audi S4 you cant feel a thing...which is probably why theres so many accidents these days...people driving 1 car length apart at 90mph in the rain is quite a common sight on my commute !

Ha ha, yes he is a Lotus nerd, & yes that is a huge compliment! He always seems to know everything about the future models, I guess just coz he's sniffing about at 111r's etc

The toyo's are very cheap in comparison, but all I can say is that I wanted to get the exige Yoko 048's but just cant afford them at the moment. Lots of people said the toyo's were really good, so I thought for the money, give them a try. I don’t drive slow and the toyo's are a massive improvement over the old P-zeros I had, so far I have'nt lost grip in them which just means I need more nuts to push them harder but with ice around at the moment, that’s a bit too risky. And being able to last up 15,000 miles is a bonus ! The sidewalls may be slightly softer but unless you track it you would find it hard to push the tyres enough to exploit there advantages. And at the end of the day, england is wet most of the time….. Having said all that, if I could afford the A048's, I would have bought them instead…. With the toyo's costing less than half the yoko's, are they really worth extra?? Desicsions decisions……

have been put off ordering the t1-r due to the many negative comments about sidewall flex ruining handling.

so have just ordered the toyo r888
supposed to be very similar to the ao48
special price of 360 a set at moment as against 550 odd for the the a048

T1-Rs are fine for road use....and take some wearing out...I just need something more sticky to have a hope of putting 300bhp down

A039s for winter are great - 80-90% of dry grip of A048s and clear water really well..shame they are expensive and wont last as long.
