Football related thread. World Cup 2006
Discussion
Me and a couple of mates are thinking of driving over to Germany for the world cup next summer, and I was wondering if anyone could clarify a few points for me.
Am I right in thinking that England fans wont be allowed into Germany without tickets?
Where can I get tickets without having to rely on extortionate touts outside the games??
Are any other PH'ers planning on going??
Cheers all,
Ed.

It's not always extortionate. We got tickets for a game at France '98 while we were out there. 30 mins before kickoff, face value. We were in the wrong end but who cares (unless you play Germany or Argentina
) We were sat down with beer in hand in plenty of time.puggit said:

Thats what I thought, although when it comes to European Police and English people, usual laws dont apply. In my experience anyway.
I think the idea is that we just drive over there, perhaps go to see at least one of the group games and hang around until England go home.
Do you reckon this will be acceptable as far as the local Polizei are concerned??
unless you've got prior football-related convictions, of course you'll get in. you might get stopped at the border, or checked for a bit longer at the airport, you might get escorted around by a big green riot van, if there's lots of you, but that's it. there are loads of brits (and every other nationality) in germany already

It's lucky the Turkish didn't qualify, but I'm sure the Turks in Germany will be all out for trouble-making, especially when the Swiss turned up...
Simple rule of thumb - avoid the main squares/Plazs
not so relevant but I went to see manutd -v- bayern munich in germany a few years ago (at the height of the foot/mouth epidemic) and every policeman we saw were just so nice!
(honestly it was amazing how friendly munich was, all the locals/police we came by couldn't have been nicer. Nothing like italy & madrid!)

that'd be English hooligans thank you (unless some welsh lads join in
) Scotland hasn't qualified, and there is NO hooliganism amongst the tartan army anyway

Ahhh, but I'm half Welsh and half English. I'd be quite happy to go out there and support England.
Now does that make me an English hooligan or a British hooligan?

30 years ago?...times change and it's out of order, but breaking goalposts and digging up turf is not the same as pitched battles on the streets
assuming the Scots don't really about Hampden as they hardly ever seem to be there when a game's on), the English would be hooligans and vile scum.
well, a)no scotland international would be played at ibrox or parkhead (besides the point i know)
b) hampden has been sold out long in advance for any qualifying game I've been to in the last couple of years, no matter the opposition, so i don't get your point there
and c) yes, anyone who trashed a ground would nowadays be considered 'vile scum' by me, no matter what nationality
edit for 'the scotsman' piece: yes, it's about young people on holiday, not about scotland football fans, 'the tartan army'
I travel to as many scotland games as i can, there is never any fighting or vandalism, only drunkenness!
anyway, that's nothing to do with the topic in hand

True, the burberried up idiots may not always be there to support engerlund but they use the football as an excuse for their antics. I spent a few years travelling round with the Tartan Army and the first question most people asked when we arrived was 'Are you like the English?'
Hampden has had a couple of barren days but the SFA started moving the 'smaller' games around to the likes of Tyncastle and Pittodrie. A lot of the guys following Scotland are not Old Firm supporters (I am but I'm in the minority I would imagine).
I'm not saying we don't have any problems but the Travel Club and ticketing regulations we have in place for away games, and the fact you see the same faces over and over again, make it more difficult and less attractive for idiots to find their way amongst us.

well, hungary was a midweek friendly (it was 16,000, i've just checked
) and it was a low point for attendance. (plus ibrox and parkhead are more like 60,000 - a fair chunk of those don't support scotland too) "I should hazard a guess that if you checked arrest rates per capita of the all the home nations, they would not be much different"
there are consistently zero arrests for scotland fans on away trips, thats with a hard core of about 5,000 travelling fans and up to 15 or 20 thousand for big draws like holland or germany
"plus if you stand there as a foreign policeman in full riot gear and acting like a thug yourself (Belgian, Turkish and Italian police in particular) and you turn water cannons on people indiscriminately then what do you expect people to do"
it is self-perpetuating to some extent - England fans have a reputation, police are expecting trouble and are heavy-handed, thus causing more trouble and securing the reputation
"it's no surprise that the Dutch approach of corraling England fans in a square with free beer and music with low visibility policing led to virtually no arrest at Euro 2000"
may have been down to the watered down low-alcohol beer they gave you as well as the special dutch herbs some of the fans took advantage of - see belgium for full strength beer and no wacky baccy
speed8 - you go to a lot of away games? i was in slovenia, moldova, italy out of this last campaign

I used to go from France '98 through to the Euro '02 Dublin/San Marino/Zagreb/Brussels, etc, qualifiers and friendlies but work took over and Bertie didn't inspire me enough to spend a grand trying to get to Eastern Europe for two days.
The last straw was when a Russian hotel chain skinned me for a booking that supposedly didn't go through in Lithuania/Latvia? Can't remember which one.
The Travel Club ended up cocking up my renewal and told me I would have to start from scratch which means back of the queue for away tickets. Meant I would have had no chance for the Italy/Norway/Slovenia games and even Belarus would likely have been difficult to get tickets for.
I still try and get to the odd home game now and again.
