Good news if it's true (nothing on BBC site), but on the french news they're reporting that al-Zarqawi was killed with 7 other fighters in a US attack on a house in Mosul. Whether it will make any difference on the grander scale of things I doubt, but another bloody bastard wiped off the map suits me fine.

Did they decapitate him with a blunt knife?

If not, shame.

I wonder if the timing of his death is linked to the bombs in Jordan. They have caused so much outrage (hitting a Jordanian wedding party FFS!) and polarised the public and his family against him - it wouldn't surprise me if there was suddenly quality information available to the allies on his whereabouts.

Supposedly some of the 8 men killed topped themselves to avoid being taken alive. With a bit of luck that won't count as an honourable death and the mythical virgins won't even give them the time of day....

I always think that killing a terrorist makes him a martyr to others , best to capture him alive and parade him in court on telly and face him to his atrocities before sentencing , much more effective than death.

I really don't see what difference it will make.

Most of us supsect that Bin Laden may be a goner, but we still here about Al Queda constantly. Al queda , as they keep telling us is not an organised group so what difference does it make if a few high profile members are killed..or 'martyred'.

There are plenty of people waiting for their opportunity to follow them now.

Yup... One falls, but there will be another to take his place. Its a nice soundbyte to pretend we are getting somewhere, but in the wider view, nothing has changed...

I can't really see that it'll make much difference whether he's alive or dead. There'll be some other razor-dodging chap ready to step into his sandals.

My bro is out and about in land rovers in Basra at the moment, and I doubt if Al-Zarqawi's death will have any impact on what is going on there. Keep safe, bruv!

A lot of his support will have been in the form of help and denial of knowledge of his whareabouts. Many wanted arabs moove freely around. The attack on the Amman weddings would have made much of this disapear. Attacking palestinians in an arabic country at weddings is going to be VERY unpopular. Bombing exact people who have supported you.

I really hope he is dead and they havnt done something sill like try and capture him.

The Saddam trial will go on for years...
