OK I'm going to Paris next week. Where is a good area to stay in? I don't want to have to travel too far, and would appreciate not getting caught up in a riot. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay on the (relative) cheap, and what to see and do in the 2 days I will be there?

Thanks very much

Try the St lazare region , Barbes, place de clichy in Paris , where I stayed last time prices start from about 27 euros a night.

if you do nothing else visit the louvre and see the elysee - but take care with parisians, they do not like tourists very much.

What did the Parisian restauranteur say when the Nazis invaded?

'Table for 1,000 M'Sieur?'

Hello from Paris

Try the Ibis/Mercure/Accor chain, cheapish rooms with little frills

It's where I'm typing this from, although I'm in the suburbs

My personal favourite area is the Rive Gauche/Left Bank, but that might be pricey!

Unless you have to, don't IMHO the parisians are stereo typical of the way we see the French. This is not the case, and I urge you to go south. Try the Loire. Fantastic. Nice people, nice Chateaux, nice wine and great driving roads. All IMHO but...... I have been to Paris more than I care to remember, staying last time near the Gar De Nord. Cheap, and you can see why.

Rue Mouffetard

Walking Luxembourgh parc, Picasso and Rodin musee, La Defense for a change.

Don't look for that dead Doors guy but to begin the day with that cementary is very good.

Love Isle de la Citee, the subway station there is cool.

Lazare and near Opera, Auber . . . a nights stroll down those wide blvds . . . Gawd do I miss Paris.

Don't forget to see Bitter Moon before you go.

Have fun, cheers, Dink.

Wherever you stay, check out 'Le Trois Mallet' piano bar if they let you in. They only let us (a group of 5 lads) in becuase an Irish guy who knew the doorman told him we were The Thrills. Once in though, with the vin rouge flowing, we thoroughly entertained the locals and drank until 9am. We couldn't figure out what went on downstairs in the place but we went back the day after

Edit: It's just round the corner from Notre Dame too.

Do a Bateau Mouch (sp?) dinner cruise. You get to see Paris by night to nice music and good food. Very recommended.
