If only Ali was in his prime and had lamped the slack-jawed warmonger right in his monkey face...

Mohammed Ali.

A man who refused to fight in Vietnam being awarded a medal by another man who also dodged out of his duties.

I sense a can of worms being opened...
I have a lot of respect for Ali, it took guts to stand up and say 'I have no truck with these people, jail me'. Whatever you think of his politics and whether his decision was right, you have to respect the courage of his convictions.
That and him being one of the greatest pugilists in history.

Ali refused to fight out of principle, let's be fair - no one can say he was a coward... bush refused because he's a shirker and a pussy*

edit: *but seemingly not afraid to let other people fight on his behalf

Why? I really don't understand the constant buzz around this man, sure he was a good boxer, had a good wit, but he also had some less than desirable aspects -His membership of the Nation of Islam, a group that is rasict and has been labeled a hate group.

Absolutely spot on! We are so damned PC that we have to go studdering behind these types with no consideration of things like membership in a racist organization....and it IS racist. Let him have been a past member of the Klan, and you would never hear his name again....all bullshit.

Ali was "carried" for half his carrer by picking under-skilled fighters, fights being fixed(happened oh so frequently), and favortism by judges(ex. the Jimmy Young fight).

so what Jimbeaux?...isn't that what boxing has been all about?

money? entertainment?......the razzamatazz?.....that's what Ali gave to the world of boxing, what people wanted.......the man had style, ability,an intellect and could box.....so what if he fought journey-men and was favoured by the judges......he was still a 'warrior' in my eyes and stuck up for his principles ....THAT is to be admired

IMHO The last real 'warrior' in the ring was Tyson, who fought on too long and let his personal demons take over

After second thought, I came to the same conclusion and deleted the post you commented on...pretty quickly actually. You responded a while after that....playing God a little are we Ted, raising posts from the dead? P.S. True about Tyson...he would have knocked Ali out in 2 rounds during his prime IMHO. He was more of a true "pounder", like Marciano or Foreman.

Not a big fan of either, at least Ali did his time, GWB just pulled strings for a cushy ANG job and even then he didn't turn up half the time apparently.

No Jimbeaux.....my P.C. is just too damn slow !

Tyson vs Ali?....that WOULD have been a fight to see!

also reckon Tyson in his prime would have caned Ali

.....back to the racist thing......can you see why Ali may have embraced the nation of Islam?.....around the time of Ali's rise to fame he,more than most, may have seen the difference between the haves and have nots....the futility of discrimination between the blacks and whites ?....if you were he...would you feel as strongly as to make the same sort of statement/commitment....not saying it was necessarily right....but you could possibly understand his feelings on this? ....he did say things that were needed to be said.

NOI and Klan......both as bad as one another IMHO

topic getting too heavy.....

let's get back to slagging the monkey faced war mongerer

I'm sorry, but the one thing Ali didn't have was intellect. he was below the IQ level allowed for someone to be drafted, until they lowered it. then he was drafted rather quickly...

You are talking out of arse.

If you as an american try to equate his membership of the NOI at that time with all that was going on there, with being a member of the Klan..you clearly have a really distorted view of history. The NOI really only existed as a result of the Klan and the racist 50s america anyway. They were angels compared to those nazis.

As for Ali vs. Tyson...well george foreman was probably the most formidable fighter of all time..very similar to tyson at his best.
And look what happened to him.

Get that fight out on video and you will realise why he is the greatest sportsman of all time.
(while your at it get the thriller in manilla with joe frazier)

Lets not forget the climate that existed in the USA at that time. It wasn't long since that Rosa Parks made her stand.

Why?

As well as being one of the finest athletes of all time and an amazingly talented individual, something acknowledged by him being voted sports personality of the last century, he is show man, an entertainer, a wit, a hero and a man of principal. Throwing away the Olympic gold medal you won, because you feel let down by the country you won it for, is a fairly powerful statement. Yes, he was a little naive and misguided when he joined the NOI but he, along with countless other black people in America at the time, was struggling for an identity. His sentiments of not going to fight someone who had inflicted no harm or malice upon him or his family is something that rings a little louder closer to home nowadays.

The aura he has around him is not by chance. He was an ambassador then, he took the World's media circus and attention straight to the heart of Africa when he had the chance, and is a great role model now. I'd suggest you read a few of the many books written about him to understand the truth behind the legend. People don't become heros for no good reason. The World doesn't watch with a lump in it throat as just any old Joe Schmo stands proud despite crippling illness to light the Olympic flame. He is widely considered to be one of the most influencial people in modern times, not bad for the son of a sign painter who only learnt to box so he could go and retake his stolen bike for the kid who stole it - incidentally an obvious act of wrong doing against him that he considered worth fighting for. Principals....
