I'm trying to wire some money to my step-son, who is competing in the Formula Palmer Audi races (His name is Konstantin or Kostya Zhyrnov)(so, yes, my thread does sort of have something to do with cars)

Anyway he can receive money in either AIB (Allied Irish Banks) he would use the branch on Holloway Road in London if that makes a difference) OR Barclays Bank (the one in Horsham, West Sussex)

I need the US correspondent bank information to complete the wire. Kostya has had trouble locating the information, of course English is not his first language so maybe he did not understand what he was told.

If any of you could find this out for me, I'd be quite grateful. I need the US bank name, address, and "ABA number". You banker types, I hope, know what I'm talking about!

You could post here or email to me at mitch@pnl.gov (work) or mitch@bentonrea.com (home)

Thanks!!

US banks use different routing numbers for wire transfers versus regular demand deposit accounts. Your best bet is to call the UK bank and ask them what bank to use. Any UK bank can wire/transfer money to any US bank. It all goes through automated clearing houses anyway. If it is an emergency cash transmittal, you can always use a moneygram or some other method (Western Union WT, etc). I am away from the office or else I would be able to get the info for you. I will check on this thread in the morning and have a rummage if it is not answered.

Ernest,

Thanks for the reply, I tried to call the bank and didn't get an answer. I would think they would have this information available on their website but I could not seem to find it.

My own bank (credit union) is pretty adamant that I have to supply the US corresponding bank information, and it has to come from the UK bank.

In fact that's what I'm asking for - maybe someone here either works at one of these banks, or uses the bank, and could ask either AIB or Barclays what US corresponding bank they use.

I am surprised there is no directory or database available for this information. I'm surely not the only person to have this problem!

Mitch,

I would suggest that you advise the US bank of the sortcode and account number for the Barclays Account, together with Barclays UK's SWIFT code (BARCGB22). This should allow them to generate an IBAN. The ABA number is an internal US code (used for FedWire etc.). Barclays probably don't have one as they haven't had a US clearing operation since they sold out to BoNY some years ago. If they can't make that work, the SWIFT code for Barclays US is BARCUS33, which might help.

Pardon my ignorance, but is Barclays US the corresponding bank for Barclays UK? If Barclays US sold out to Bank of New York, maybe then Bank of New York is the corresponding bank?

If one of you could call Barclays bank in West Sussex, address is 2 Carfax, Horsham, and ask them what their US corresponding bank is, I'd be quite grateful. It's difficult to find a working phone number and UK banking hours correspond with the very early morning on the West Coast here.

I could also use Allied Irish Bank, the branch that I would send to is on 629/635 Holloway Road in London if that makes any difference.

The number that I have found for Barclays' information line is 0044(8457)555555. If someone would give them a call and ask for the correspondent bank information fo the US, it would help me out a lot.

Turns out it's possible to wire money without a domestic correspondent bank but there is a risk that if it is somehow mis-directed it can be hard to recover.

I don't know how much you are trying to send, but you may want to try these people:

www.moneygram.com/default.htm

They do have a London agent for international wire transfers. They are listed as New Call Box on their web site (use the locate agent feature). We use these people in my business here in Orlando to facilitate a bill payment method for some of our clients and can assure you that they are quite reputable.

I called my friend that works for the ABA this morning only to find out that he is on vacation right now (bank holiday in the US at the end of the week so he took the preceeding days off).

Ernest, thanks, this is probably the right answer! I'm only sending $2500.

These people will sort it for you, then. Also, I think they include a "free" long distance telephone call with the service so that you can notify the recipient of the transaction to go pick up their cash.

Good luck. Moneygram agents are everywhere in the US (including some local Wal Marts).

I received money in Australia from the UK via Western Union Money Transfer. AUS$5000. It was pretty painless, no bank details needed, we picked it up from the post office. I can't really remember how we did it, but i think we just filled in a 'claim' form in the post office with the correct reference number and name/address of sender and that was it.

Then i just had to work out how to disguise $5000 in cash in my pocket through the middle of perth!!

Thanks to all of you who helped, turns out I was able to get the Swift number from one of you, found a phone # to reach Barclays and get the routing number and that their US corresponding bank is Bank of America, who have a local branch here in town, where I got their ABA number...so finally accumulated a critical mass.

Although I didn't use the Moneygram, I'll keep that in mind for the future as it is probably less hassle.

Thanks again to all of you!!
