I've just been told to buy a new printer because my ink cartridges have expired. The cost of the printer through our business supplier is £48 delivered including ink cartridges. Cost of a black and colour cartridge pack £52.

How stupid is that?

The cartridges it comes with don't last very long so you soon end up spending the £52 anyway, as I recently found out. The business is all in the consumables.

Try these people, we use them at work and have never had a problem.

You even get some free chocolates when they deliver.

Having said that, I bought a HP 4-colour printer about 2 years ago and the low-volume carts that came with it have only just run out (not that I do that much photo printing). The replacements came to £80-odd (new printer is ~£140) but are all at least double the size of the originals (the black is roughly triple). Suspect the printer will die somewhat earlier than the ink next running out!

For HP originals from there, the cost is pretty much identical to ebuyer.

Crumbs you lot but expensive printer cartridges.

Here is a tip: Canon cartridge £15, Tesco cartridge £4.

Dec '05 edition of PCW compared OEM and non-OEM carts and concluded that although cheaper, print quality was reduced.
Don't know how independent they are, though.

In my experience, printers don't last long enough to change the ink more than once anyways.

All the last 3 [sounds like a horce race] printers I've had have died before the replacement cartridges have run out after changing them once from the originals.

What make are they? I've been using various HP Deskjets for years and have never had one break on me.

Isn't the work stationary cupboard the cheapest place to get ink cartriges (on account of all the work printing you do at home)

It's the replacement which are too expensive.

Epson colour laser printer - about £400 ish.

Each replacement colour (4 of them) - £100.

Plus other bits now and then like drum. You may as well dump the printer if all colours run out. It's the same with most mono laser printers if the drum needs replacing.
