I appear to have managed to royally screw myself. I'd kind of seen this coming but had approached it with typical head in sand ignorance and now find myself to be ploughing a fairly solitary furrow.

I've lived and worked in the same place for 8 years now. During that time friends and girlfriends have come and gone but there's always been people around. Over the last two years most of my friends have moved away, the last one last week. Last night was a major epiphany really in that I now have only 2 people locally who I go out drinking or whatever with (and they were both busy) and the woman situation here is beyond desperate. These aren't likely to change any time soon so I'm now looking down the barrel of weekends of nothingness........well, car cleaning and PS2 at any rate.

What can my worldy wise PH'ers come up with to rectify this situation?

My advice is to become a regular at a local pub which is frequented by a range of different sorts of people. It may well acquire you a few new mates. Can't help on the women front thoough - I've married for ever!

Spend more time on PH. More interesting that TV and cheaper than going out.

My local pubs are packed with chavs and gypos. Perfect for buying a watch or getting a new driveway, not the kind of mates you'd want!

i keep myself to myself so i am not the best person to answer this. i have my mates from uni and some from when i worked oop north. i don't have any mates here and that's fine by me! it's a bit naff but doing evening courses lets you meet people - whilst about 72% were freaks on my vb course the others were quite good fun. my missus did italian and not being such a nerdy thing she met some ok people on that...

oh and motogp is on in 20mins so you can watch that!

Join some clubs, put yourself out there more, join a dating agency (online is quicker and easier), be more adventurous in your outlook on life, move!

Only you can make it happen with some effort!!

I moved to a new area recently (as apposed to my frieds moving away....are they trying to tell you something?)knowing no one. Within a few weeks I had a nice stable of female friends from a dating website who I go out with and have fun with and have a new girlfriend.

So....off your arse, stop cleaning tha car so much, put the PS2 away and join the real world!!!

exactly what Gary said above - a real good way to meet new people is to join clubs and take up new things. Whether it be a fitness club (a weekly class maybe), or even just join a dating site to meet people. Or go speed dating.

You only need to meet one person to bring you into a new group of people or friends.

So, another vote here for the 'get off your bum' approach!

Just to add.... there is an interesting article in the Sunday Times today saying that men find it difficult to enjoy their own company, whereas women don't.

I personally enjoy my own company and love living on my own following divorce BUT a good supply of friends is crucial.

Perhaps they're trying to tell you something!

PS2 is great - I've got GT4 and it's highly addictive (usually manage to come 1st or 2nd!).

I can't advise really because I don't know your personal circumstances, but have you ever contemplated making a move away from the area?

LOL, they're telling me what we all knew: Where we live(d) is shite! In the short term moving isn't an option house or career wise. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not, all the time at least, sat on my arse doing nothing about it. I'm putting graft into my house so I can get that sold when the job situation lets me move. However, in the meantime.....

Or buy World of Warcraft and actually be glad you have no (other) life and external commitments.

girlfriend is threatening withdrawal of privileges if I don't limit play time...

Same thing happened me about 2 years ago. Most of my closest friends moved to the US and London, leaving a group of 4 of us here. We've gotten alot closer as a result, but those that have left are all pining for Dublin and are starting to think about coming home again. We're constantly all in touch, and I'm in London a few times a year. Join a gym or club (done), get back in contact with those that you know you should have kept up with in the first place (done that too) and enjoy yourself. Life is not only about enjoying yourself on a Saturday night. It's not so bad when you consider all the other stuff you could be doing.
