Very interesting programme on Channel 4 on how the muslim faith and Arabic knowledge had an affect on Europe centuries ago,i never realised the numbers we use today were of arabic origin, some of the first examples can be found on the Rafters of Salisbury Cathedral, built back in 1200 century.

Same as that.

I was laid out dozing on the settee with the programme on in the background,Bettany Hughes has a very interesting voice and pleasant manner and attracted/encouraged me to sit up and watch,i never realised Spain was once a Muslim country.

Yep Moors ruled southern Spain, and Italy and Germany didn't exist until the late 1800's. European history is full of little kinks like that. Anybody remember that the Austrian's had an empire??

The terms "Moors" just means "dark" (from the greek "Mauros"(, and subsequently "black". The people were generally North African.

Well, they had half of Spain, which isn't really 'Europe'. The Alhambra in Granada is fabulous.

Talking of invaders, don't forget that the Mongol hordes, sweeping West from - er - Mongolia, got as far as Hungary before domestic rivalries forced them to return home. They also turned up in Palestine just as the Crusaders were scrapping with Saladin and Co. You know you're having a bad day when you're up to your armpits fighting the Crusaders on one side, and then Genghis Khan turns up at your other door They could have joined one side or the other and swung the battle (and possibly changed history), but didn't get involved.

Whoopsie, better not call them Moors then, it's racist!

It's interesting that the arabic origin of number symbols are based on how units were written in sand or dirt, whilst they were transacting deals.

Obviously 1 was just a straight vertical line in the sand. Thereafter, 2 was two horizontal lines- but, over time they were adjoined by the diagonal line due to writing this number quickly in sand. The same applies to the number 3. Three horizontal lines, drawn quickly in sand, will appear as our 3.

As tonight's programme showed, these numerics were easier to multiply etc than the Roman equivalents of letter based 'numbers'

The muslim hordes invaded Europe later on too, getting as far as Vienna, Austria in 1683.

Before that, in 732, they got as far as Poitiers in France. Yes, just over the channel (sort of). They could have been here before the Normans if the French hadn't held them off.
