Hi chaps,

Laying up the 348 over the winter and abandonded the smartcar idea.

Think I'm buying a 1988 635 CSI auto on saturday. having it checked over my a BM speacialist and think its a decent price, just wondered if anyone had ever had one & what you think of them?

Its the dechromed highline model, completeley original and decribed as excellent(but he would say that!) Its metallic black with light grey leather.

Hi!

I have a 1989 635csi highline. I've had it now for 3 years. Its a great car and economical to run when on trips out. Ive had a average of 27 on a run from Cambridge to Liverpool and seem to be able to get near this figure on all long runs being careful with me right foot. Round the town is its only downfall, and at the moment it reads 15mpg average driving round Cambridge city. Mine has done 165k and still runs beautiful. Shocks and rear suspension bushes is all I've had to pay out for of any great cost. I did replace all the brake discs last year as well. the beauty of these cars is that they are easy to work on and most of the bits are well made and solid.

One of the only problems I've had is the air con. the gas for these systems is getting difficult to get hold of as its now banned.

Change the engine and gearbox oil every year. the auto box is the one to have with the switchable type. This box shows signs of wear if the oil is not changed often. The main problem being that all the old oil cannot be dropped out. So a change every year soon gets the new stuff flowing round to smooth out the changes.

good luck if you get one.

Gadgit.

went to see what was decribed as an "immaculate" car on saturday. The guy told me that the only thing that was wrong with it (he said) was that it had a tiny spot of rust on the back bumper and a tiny bit of wear on the drivers seat. Clarified this 3 times with muppet owner before taking up most of saturday going to see it.

The reality...got there, the car had rust across the whole of the back end (which had been resprayed badly), both rear lights were cracked, the headlight was smashed, the leather interior was damaged beyond repair, literally wrecked. The stereo was hanging out.
He told me that it only had had a few owners but wasn't sure how many off hand, it was actually 9 owners.

I wasnt very happy to say the least, oh and on the way home I phoned the chap who had the other one I wanted to see & he had sold it that morning...arrrggghhh

I had a 1988 Highline in Lachs Silver. It was a stunning car. The only negative points were in my opinion the TRX tyres which could cost a packet. After market wheels would solve the problem but never seem to look as stylish. Watch out for a blown exhaust, no one makes replica ones for post 97 (I think) models and BMW ones cost a grand. The front wings can rust through just above the bumper line so keep them free of dirt.
The best mpg I ever got was 30 on a long trundle up the M6. It would do 27 on average with no restraint whatsoever. I traded mine a couple of years back and have regretted it ever since. I hope to get another at some point.
Happy motoring!

If you havn't bought the six yet be patient you will eventually find a good one. It took me 6 months to find mine. Buy a manual one they are much better if a little heavy on the clutch in traffic. Post 82 they were only available as a special order in manual, post 85 cars get an upgraded engineas it does not suffer from head problems. Check front wings for rot and inner wings they are exspensive £700 from BMW check under the rear jacking points for rot and inside the boot floor. If there is any rot here walk away as you can rip the gear box and chassi out giving it some stick which will right the car off. But on condition and history and not on Mileage.
