After a couple of runs recently heard a squeak from behind my head. Fairly loud as I can actually hear it above engine din!

After a little bit of experimentation it seems that it only happens when the car is rolling and no gear is engaged.

So ... progress along road, slow speed, come off the gas, clutch in, squeeeeak.
Or ... progress along road, slow speed, come off the gas, clutch out, NO squeeeeak.

Any insights? Its a bit loud and iritating

My seat itself squeaks when I get in it and move about in it ever since I had the seat out to clean underneath it.

Because the squeak is there when the power is off and slowing, have you checked the breaks. I reckon it is an anti squeal shim that has been lost.

The only thing I can think of....

No furry rodents in the car (although they could potentially be nesting under the passenger seat and feeding on the half eaten bag of quavers that I can't reach!) and I think I'll give it a couple more weeks before I bin it for a replacment :-o ... nice suggestion though.

Gooby ... not braking when squeeking so I don't think its a lost shim, I'll nip out later and check though.

The anti squeal shims stop the squealing when you are NOT braking. It is not something you can see. A good test is to very carefully apply some copper grease to the back of the pad. DO NOT GET ON THE PAD OR DISK BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT STOP. The will deaden the squaking for a short while. This in itself is not a comprehensive test because more often then not it is the inner pad that has lost the shim and is squealing. You can still have the shim and have squeaking. It will give you an idea of what to listen out for.
