Class 2 NI is the IMPORTANT NI for sole traders (and partners). It is only £2.10 per week BUT it is THE NI contribution which counts for your eventual state pension. The Class 4 NI you pay as part of your Self Assessment "tax" bill DOES NOT COUNT as an NI contribution
You are supposed to notify the Inland Revenue within three months of commencing Self Employment and they usually set you up for Class 2 NI fairly promptly. Many people pay by monthly Direct Debit which works out at £8.40 od £10.50 per month - depending on how many Fridays there are in the relevant month. Alternatively you can pay it quarterly by cheque.
If your earnings from Self Employment were below the "Small Earnings Exemption (SEE) Limit, you can apply to NOT pay the Class 2 NI. However, you must notify them that you will not need to pay it and you must ALSO notify them if your earning eventually exceed the SEE so that you can start paying the Class 2 NI as soon as possible.
It is actually a criminal offence NOT to notify the Inland Revenue of such matters.
