Bass In Your Face
Discussion
Bass guitars have 4 strings, right. Then there are 5 string basses for when bottom E is not low enough or you need to go investigating a register outside your normal remit (see "Prog Jazz" ). Then there's the 6 string bass, for those bass players who are envious of the lead guitarist because 6-stringers get all the chicks.
So, you might be thinking "Surely, the 6-string is the pinnacle of bass guitars because nobody would build or want, say, a 7 string....or more..."
WRONG!
I give you - The Ziricote 9 String Bass!

Well...
As a proficient musician, I have to tell you that the higher pitched the string, the shorter the space between each note.
Obviously there are other factors such as tension.. blah blah blah, but by what they say on the website, the top strings are similar to guitar pitched and the bottoms strings nearer bass pitch.

Yeah I spent years playing double bass out on the jazz scene (nice!), and I can confirm that whereas one hand position could play 2 semitones at the bottom of the string, it could play 4 at the top (high notes).
I tried playing a violin once, the notes were so close together my fingers were wider than the notes!

Have a look through their site and find the 8 string bass with the frets arranged in a fan-shape.
I'm still trying to figure out how that works.
Unless its for specialist applications. Like Ethno-Prog-Jazz or something....

I've built several guitars (5 string bass and 'normal' guitars) with the fan fret arrangement and wouldn't go back to normal now - makes a lot more sense once you get the hang of it
The basic idea is that as your hand moves in an arc rather than a straight line it's more natural. First came across it whilst at college - guy called Ralph Novak was building them back in the 90's.What about the 12 string basses that John Paul Jones played on 'Zooma'?
