Got my monthly mobile bill this morning, £20.20p worth of 'third party charges' on the bill. What's this I think? I log onto my account and see that last month £26.00p was also taken out for 'third party charges'. I call the phone company and they tell me it is for text messages from an organisation called 'Jamster'. I have been getting loads of 'junk texts' from Jamster and have been just deleting them unread. By coincidence I got another junk text from them as soon as I came off the phone from my service provider, this time I read it, f ing unbelievable...

'Thank you for subscribing to XYZ services at a monthly cost of £3.99p, if you do not require this service text STOP to 88888 now or telephone...'

I havent got a clue who these idiots are, nor why they feel they can inform me that they are robbing me and continue to do so until I tell them to stop robbing me. I did indeed telephone them, I am usually polite but firm when sorting this sort of thing out, but I am afraid that the lady who took my call got the biggest dose of unrestrained anger and vehemence that anyone from any organisation has ever received from me, ever. Needless to say she picked up 'the signals' and agreed to reimburse all charges in full, with goodwill, and erase my number from their database for ever.

Unbelievable.

Have you sent a message for a new ringtone over the last two months at all?

That's the game they like to play, getting you to text for a ringtone, without telling you it automatically subscribes you to a premium rate service!

There was a story about this recently a young girl ordered a ringtone then started receiving text messages about other tones. She did the same and just deleted them. Turns out they can bill you for sending you a text regardless if you open it or not. The girl ended up with a huge bill, cant remember what it was.

If you get another get it sorted do not just delete it as they are billing you by sending it.

I downloaded a ring tone off one of these companies, and they wanted my number to send me a password to enter their site.

Couple of weeks ago I got a txt message saying that they were going to charge me £3 a week for tones or wallpapers or something. Glad I read it, cos I sent stop straight away.

But like you I usually delete them thinking they're just junk, usually without reading them.

This annoys me.

Those Jamster adverts always say "For just three pounds a week..."

And alot of adverts for charitable organisations say something similar.

And who gets the three pounds per week?

Yep... Bloody Jamster et al.

Vaguely similar thing happened to me recently when I used my mobile phone in Ibiza. A couple of months after coming home I noticed someone was billing my phone bill for about £1.25 a week, it was some sort of spanish-sounding name. Bear in mind I hadn't subscribed to anything and have never downloaded anything from any third parties, so quite how this company had arranged to leech my account I don't know!

Surely this practise has got to be illegal... And if not, why not?

A contract requres the agreement between two parties. In the absence of an agreement there is no contract....so they can naff of and you don't have to pay.Slipping some small print onto the bottom of an electronic communication does not make a contract binding. They will argue otherwise of course, but its for them to prove the point-not you.

change thecontract with your service provider-you shouldn't be in a position where payment is automatic
